I haven't seen the Camaro column, but if it's anything like the one we have, the upper portion designed to collapse actually came out on this one or snapped (neither by design). Hard to make a judgment from a single pic. |

I don't have any other column pics but it seems like a two piece design. A sleeve type.

No way it is designed to come off like that for 2 reasons. You get rear ended and pushed into another object and the bag needs to be in place for secondary collision. Next. Who wants a wheel jammed between the dash and their crotch setting off YOUR bags.

So looking at this again, Im guessing there was a crack or break in the column itself that finally gave up the ghost....that or the guy turned hulk after the crash and ripped it out........would of been a bit exciting if it had come off on the driver during a turn at say 65 mph i imagine

Wasn't the Cruze recalled because the steering wheel fell off while driving?

I guess if you leave the bolts out it would collapse nicely.

I wonder if the lever that secures the positioning of the wheel wasn't all the way up and tight if it would come off if it was yanked on hard enough.

Of course, I don't think it should have came off. But perhaps someone left a bolt out or something? Anybody want to go move the lever to adjust their wheel, and give it a good hard yank?

Is this the same steering wheel used on the newer Camaros? Didn't get a good look but it seemed similar in appearance.
