New to the forum! Introduction/questions regarding future Z28 purchase
Hey guys, I'm new the the forum here. Just to give a little intro I live in SE Minnesota and operate a Collision Repair/Custom Paint shop with my father. American Muscle cars have always been my personal favorite, especially regarding the Camaro. My dad owns a 69' Camaro that had a Z/28 302 swap. Unfortunately he tore the car down to do some repairs and it has been back together since. (RIP) He still plans to finish the project at some point but who knows when that will be ha. As for myself I currently own a 1999 Honda Civic Si that I have done everything myself to. I have had plenty of experience with high powered cars but have yet to own one of my own, that will change soon enough as I am dead set on getting a 14-15 Z/28. Just wanted to ask and get some pointers as to what I should truly look for when I am ready and able to finally make the purchase. I have done a bit of research so I know about the head issues and what have ya. Mileage to me isn't a huge concern as I plan to keep the car forever and bring it out for Road Course Test/Track days. Also, I know I will have to travel (more than likely) so that is not much of a concern either.
Sorry for the long post, I look forward to hearing for all of you! Thanks! |

Sounds like you know what you want, and I dont blame you. I would look at signs of previous tracking on the rotors. Thats about all the concern I had back when I purchased mine other than the obvious: clean history, no wrecks, etc.

Well if you did a lot of research you'll find that most of the head issues are with LS7's in the C6 Z06 and not the 14-15 Z/28's. The issue was supposedly caught in 2011 and corrected shortly after. But you'll still have shops that swear Z/28 heads are bad, and others that swear they are fine. Poke around enough and you'll find that there's only been a handful of Z/28 engines go bad, out of 1750-ish cars built, and of the ones that went bad only 1 or 2 were traced back to valvetrain issues.
But anyways, welcome to the board, and go buy that black one that got hit in the showroom. It's up for $34k or something along those lines.

Since the brakes are so expensive you might want to do a iron rotor conversion not the cheapest initially but those CCM rotors and pads are a spendy consumables.

I've had mine about a month. You're gonna love it. Others here know TONS more than I do about these cars. So I'm not gonna have any additional insight on the "what to look for" question.
But what I do know and (and have a lot of experience in) is how markets work. My only piece of advice is this. If you see a car you like and the price is reasonable, don't f*ck around. Buy it. There's enough people out there who know about these cars (and have deep pockets) that the market recognizes value VERY quickly. If you hesitate, somebody else is gonna buy it in front of you. |

Welcome future Z owner. You'll find a lot of info here on the forum form other Z owners. Also there are tons of article about the Z becoming classic collector in the future. I've noticed if the price is right the Z will go quick. If the price is high, it will stick around for a while. At the same time it's high because it's been well taken care of. What you pay is what you get, saying goes. Good luck and hope you'll find one soon. Just here on the forum there's about 5 for sale right now.
My old quote: "Driving a Honda is like having a really nice girlfriend, pleasant to be with all the time, driving a Z/28 is like having a bad ass mistress, you can only see her once in a while, she will tear your ass up."
