Mods without voiding the warantee?

Hello ZL-1 Team, I have been searching through posts but have not found a definitive list of engine performance mods that do not void the GM warantee. Can you help me out here? Thanks for your input. I have a 6 yr, 100,000 mile warantee and would like to keep it in place.

Different dealers have different policies… Some will, some absolutely won't.

This is really a question for the dealer you're going to use. Because he can either make it real hard for you or you can make it easy for you . He needs to tell youa what he will warranty. If the dealer wants to be a jerk, even if you're in the right legally, it's gonna cost so much money to prove it.

Someone will come along here and mention "MAGNESON-MOSS", which is a great law they passed in the spirit of things, but can cost you much more than the mod to get a dealer to bend to your will on it , legally.

Callaway SC750 package is the only engine modification authorized by GM that will not void your warranty.

From Callaway's website:

Is the GM warranty voided when someone buys a Callaway?
No, the GM warranty is not voided. All non-powertrain-related parts of your Callaway are still covered by GM. If the problem is powertrain-related, Callaway works with the GM Dealer to determine the root cause. If the problem was caused by a defective GM component, and the affected components are covered by the GM powertrain warranty, then GM reimburses the dealership. If the problem was caused by a Callaway product defect and the affected components are covered by the Callaway Extended Powertrain Service Contract, then Callaway reimburses the dealership. In all cases, Callaway works directly with the dealership and the owner is not involved

OP if voiding the warranty is your first ZL1 imperative keep the drive train stock and stay away from the track.

But if you are okay with low risk voiding then you can do:
  • CAI
  • Stock Ported TB
  • Catback

You will get at best 5-10 HP. A little more SC whine and a little more fun.

No Catch Can although it seems innocuous to me.

The Callaway an interesting option and shows how a bigger SC easily improves power. The standard ZL1 little SC is too small and generates a lot of heat. Even more if you spin it faster. But I think you need to go to Callaway to do the install.

As for me if I replaced the SC it would be with a procharger for less heat and drive train stress and big power. But I doubt I will do anything like that.

Pretty much, now.... if you are hitting the 1/4mile track or road course for HPDE.... run with the hardware on your vehicle and the recommended fluids (not the brand but lets say weights), thats fine. Owners manual and supplement say nothing about voiding BUT, you run drag slicks and lets say wack up the LSD or snap a component...its on you. Run well into redline or any form of mod to extend the ECU redline... its on you. That takes us back to what you got from the showroom is about it. (Probably CAI and Catback are the few acceptable items)

Even CAI has some risk. I had a service manager pop my hood. I asked what he was looking for, he said CAI. He said he would void my warranty if I had one.

Damn I just ordered a borla catback and now I'm worried about them voiding the warranty because of the secondary cat delete. I guess we'll see!

Keep your stock parts... if you have a warranty issue that you believe is not related to your mods ( be honorbound ) , put the stock stuff back on the car take it in for service.

I perfer to do my own oil changea. If you do not, then put the stock stuff back on when you go in to the dealer
