Lightbulb Chevy states the lifespan of a Camaro...

I've seen many threads & posts debating the life expectancy of a Camaro. I stumbled onto the included video, in which a validation engineer provides the answer. It's at the 1:06 mark:

Okay, I'll bite....

What is a "validation engineer"? Does he also credit overnight parking?

Actually, he states they ran the car through three 100k lifespans.

Validation engineers are responsible for testing the systems used to develop or manufacture products, such as pharmaceuticals or automobiles. They measure, analyze and calibrate the equipment and processes to ensure the highest quality products are created.

Ok, so the vert got 300k worth of testing, what about the hardtops? Good to know, but did the same amount go into those as well?

The point isn't the amount of testing, but the fact that he states the lifespan of a Camaro is 100k miles.

I still don't understand his "life" statement. 100,000mi of severe use as one life? Then do it 3x as 3 lives. What does it all mean if you don't abuse it one life is 250k miles? It is like a computer game and you get 3 lives?

Nope. It means that the Camaro is only designed to run for 100k without falling apart....after that...well....my exploded engine is one example. The costs to keep it running become way too much to keep it on the road.

What a shame.

In validation testing as shown in the video, the engineers will submit an object (can be anything from a single part to a complete vehicle) to severe testing in the laboratory that will simulate the stress the part/vehicle would typically encounter over a calculated 'life cycle', or period of perhaps 100k miles. It does NOT mean the expected life of that part or vehicle is 100K miles, it simply means that the testing they do in a time frame of perhaps a few weeks, represents the same estimated stress that part/vehicle would experience in 100k miles.

In the case of the video, the engineers simply ran that same 'life cycle' test 3 times, simulating the stress that vehicle would endure over 300k miles of driving.

Interesting, curious why they are moving backwards. I'm pretty sure the fifth gen Corvette was engineered for 200k+

Guys, don't get caught up in terminology. The lifespan of your car is how long it goes until its scrapped in a junkyard. Some go 200 miles, some go 350k miles. Its too bad passenger car engines don't have a B rating like industrial ones do.

For those not familiar with a B rating, its worth reading about. Its basically the percentage of a particular engine relative to how many were sold that can make it to a particular mile mark. So like a B10 @ 300,000 would mean that 10% of the engines produced are expected to see 300,000 miles before it needs rebuilt.

I disagree, because it's clearly stated that testing was done for 300k, three times the 100k life cycle . I worked in HP's warranty department for several years. Life cycle is the length of time that a product is expected to function with minimal repairs & support before being deemed obsolete.
The most important lesson that I learned while there, is the true meaning of 'lifetime warranty'. It's not the length of the purchaser's lifetime, but the length of the product's lifetime. Once a manufacturer deems a product obsolete, the lifetime warranty has concluded. Most consumers aren't aware of it.
