Seems like this thread died some time ago. I'm here because I noticed that I had not heard anything about Dyno Steve for quite a while. I was just curious.

I had a remote tune from him about 2017 and lost a torque converter pretty quickly. It could've been a coincidence, weak link, etc. But there just seems to be too many negative things associated with the man. At least that's my observation.

Edit: in all fairness, I did ask him for a more aggressive tune than what my nearly all stock build called for. He obliged me. Pay to play I guess.

Was your converter after market? Was that a question on the tune sheet you submitted to Steve?

18 month quiet thread gets revised for a converter that was lost 8 years ago always makes me chuckle about the stuff that gets revived. Which, BTW, I'm all good with - forums are for chatting and discussion, and that's all perfectly relevant.

I think it's unlikely that the tuning took out the torque converter. I assume that your lockup clutch went away over time - was this a single or triple disk? Singles can absolutely be locked up under wide open throttle - which is what I would do with an aggressive tune-up. BUT - they probably will only do it for a while before the frictions get too hot and start to deteriorate. This got to the point where Circle D stopped even selling the single disk converters for 6L80s - they are just too prone to that kind of abuse and failure, and then everybody looks at the converter manufacturer who is just like "I TOLD you this would happen..."

Used to see DynoSteve's name all over the place on these forums. He had a pretty loyal following, and then a whole mess of other people pretty upset with some of the results. I think there are probably a lot of reasons for both the loyalists and dissenters. I think sometimes he got in over his head on the remote tune stuff. All water under the bridge at this point.

Uh oh... I have a Circle D 5C 4200-4500 single disc lockup converter in my car. Back when I was looking for a new converter I called Circle D and chatted with Chris, told him what I had HP/TQ wise at the wheels, and that she was a daily driver and wasn't going to see any track time. He suggested that this converter was all I needed, multi disc was something I didn't need he stated. Soooooo, should I be concerned Andrew?? Thanks..

Is your car tuned to lock the converter under wide open throttle? Typically that hits at about 6400rpm in third. See the cursor at the point below, this car has 3.45 gears so that would be even more MPH in your car with 3.27s.

You're not racing it, so how often do you run it wide open past 90mph where it would likely lock under wide open throttle? I'm guessing it's not common.

It's also not any sort of guaranteed failure at all - but a single disk doing wide open throttle lock-ups does tend to eventually wear out under that kind of use. I've seen them take it for quite a while, and some have wore out quickly. The rest of the lockup schedule could have some implications as well. If the calibration has the converter doing a lot of lock and unlock during routine driving that's additional wear as well.

Answer to this, no it isn't locked at WOT. I remember my builder/tuner telling me and posting on their FB page my dyno results, stating that the numbers were on a "unlocked converter". So I guess it isn't, because the tune hasn't been changed, except for "tweaking" it for the 4500 from the 3200 it originally had. Everything else tune wise stayed the same. And no, I dion't ever get on it at WOT for any over 90mph runs. Not enough room on the road around here. lol. My tuner had told me back when I had it retuned, it is set to lock up at 57 mph in 6th gear, you can most deffinately feel it lock.

Sounds like you're in good shape - I wouldn't stress!
