NewB! Looking into buying a 2ss

Hey guy's, I'm new to the site but not to Chevys. I have 2 el caminos a 68 on the back burner and my daily driver 78. I dump ALLOT of money into the 78 it's come a looong way from when I bought it less then a year ago.

So I live in SoCal in the S.G.V and I'm a young workaholic looking to buy a new SS. My first new car!! I test drove one today, it was an automatic though ( No offense) The old salesman guy was all scared telling me not to hurt the car so I couldent get a real feel for it.

I want a inferno orange RS/SS with black strips, ground effex package, inferno orange interior trim package, moon roof, and the hurst shifter... Comes out to just over 41k

My question to you guys and gals is...

#1 Is there any thing that I dont need to get like the ground effex package and hurst shifter? Are there any better and cheaper effex kits out there?

#2 what's your true MPG like? I drive 78 miles round trip to work. I'm use to doing that at 10 MPG in my el camino.

#3 Any one want to talk me out of it? What are the cons? or is this the car to have?... Because I sure do love it..

#4 should I wait till the 2012's come out? What are going to be the color options?

Thanks for any replies

1. If you want the GFX, the package from Chevy is your best bet. I prefer the look of the car w/o GFX.

There are a number of good shifter options. Check the Transmission forum for info. I have the Barton which provides a lot of stick and knob options for a good price.

2. I drive city only and get 13-14 MPG in my 2SS (my average speed is only 29 MPG). I would expect to get 20+ on the highway.

3. The major complaint is the visibility issues. You get used to most of it, but backing is always a little dicey...

I would prefer that the car be a little smaller and lighter (its built on a full size Cadillac chassis), but its a pure blast to drive.

4. Shouldn't be too long until all the 2012 specs come out (i.e. this summer?). If I were you, I'd wait a bit and decide when all the info is available. Then you can decide to wait on a 2012 or get a good deal on a 2011.

X2- Becky is awesome! As far as fuel economy goes, you'll get about 17mpg in town, and probably 24-25mpg on the highway.

Cool thank you guys for the feed back.. Thank you clg_98ta that was helpful.. I would call Becky but somthing tells me shes not to close to me... I live in SoCal, or does that not matter...

I'll be bringing cash in full to the dealership, I hope by doing this I can get a few grand under MSRP for the Camaro I ordered. Has any one done this?

Elkyholik87, Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to Camaro5. There is a BIG fridge on the back porch with anything you can think of in it...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. Make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom's and wive's here don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!!

If your paying cash look here for your best deal before you buy. Also I would use your 10 mph el camino for a trade in or sell it. And buy an good economy car for work and leave the Camaro at home.

As mentioned, shop around, and don't be afraid to travel for the right car. They are available at invoice from the right dealer. Don't pay over MSRP. There are still leftover 2010's on dealers lots being deeply discounted too.

I would expect low 20's highway, better with bolt ons and a tune. Some guys with light feet are getting high teens low 20's around town short shifting.

They are a great car, nobody on this site is going to talk you out of it.

Congrats on your decision to buy a Camaro. I'd be happy to help and don't worry about distance. We can have a car shipped to you!! Give me a call or PM and we'll talk about the details.

Thank you guys, thank you Becky. I'll give you a call.

SSmoothie Your idea would be the smart thing to do, I entertained the thought for about three secounds. I can see why you would say that being that you don't know Cristina. Let me introduce you. She's not all that ( she's a project that keeps me busy) But she sure does kick hard!

Those are the current ones I have on my phone.. I ripped out the carpet grinded the floor pans and painted them since then. The carb is off because I was swaping intakes.. I'm installing a new high lift cam on wednesday.. I ordered 2'' drop spindles.. I waiting on Hotchkis sport suspention to come out with there 2'' rear drop springs for the rear so I can get those,

just remember if going with 2011. Almost every dealer in my county is offering at or under invoice so I am sure you can get a good deal in your state also. Dont rush into a price and find out or ask the dealer to show you the invoice for the vehicle.

Depends on what you want to spend. I like the GFX except the back end where its square hole round muffler tip. And they truly look better if you get them painted which willj run probably another 300-500, because they come like a flat gray black color. I did the aftermarket hurst, but I would reccomend the hurst. As far as gas I get about 20-21 on the highway and 16-17 in city. Really the GFX for an extra two grand I dont know if thats worth it. But why wait for 2012 when 2011 will be cheaper.

Also If your going to deck out a 2ss and make a 40 grand car why not wait to see what the Zl1 is going to cost.
