"Reducing Drag Let it be known that some wet-sump, high-volume pumps may sound good on paper, but may not help you win races. Often, these pumps produce upwards of 80-100 psi and, unfortunately, that's more pressure than most engines need. Excessive pressure results in increased parasitic drag because, quite simply, it takes more energy to drive the pump. In reality, it is possible to run the engine with the oil pressure lower than stock and make extra power. Many engine builders feel 25-35 psi (at idle) is sufficient. Horsepower-robbing parasitic drag can be also found in the crankcase. In most engines, the crankshaft counterweights and connecting rod big ends are positioned halfway in the block and halfway in the oil pan where they can contact the oil. When the engine is running the rotating assembly sweeps through the oil, which results in parasitic drag and windage. (In lay terms, windage is the result of oil splashing on the crankshaft or off the pan walls.) Imagine if you tied a brick to a 6-inch piece of rope and whipped it around like a propeller. You'd be able to whip the brick pretty fast, however, if you forced the brick to pass through a bucket of oil it would encounter drag and be slowed. The oil would also splash around and that can cause aeration. The folks at Milodon agree, "At 8,000 rpm the outer part of the crank is rotating at approximately 300 mph. You know what air resistance is like sticking your hand out of a moving vehicle at 60 mph. Now factor in the extra resistance of oil and consider that the crank is rotating five times as fast." Reducing this resistance equals power and Milodon claims you can gain approximately 3 percent on a typical engine with a racing oil pan and proper oil control. That's about 9-12 horsepower on a 400-horsepower engine"

...and then there's oil viscosity ratings...the "lighter" the oil, the less parasitic loss you'll experience...
I was stunned to find out, several years ago, that Pro Stock racers (and others) used ZERO-W-FIVE synthetic oil. Some Manufacturers currently Factory-fill with O-W-20...with long-term warranties... Some of our hp AND mpg improvements are attributable to these newly-developed oils. Oil technology has come a very long way in the last 25 years. |

Indeed, oil technology is really amazing today. Hey, can't we just use a windage tray and a baffled pan like we used to on the LT1/L82's and call it a day?

So let's see...............................news reports $5/gallon gas by summer.
Next move is that everyone buys gasoline futures that...............ta dahhhhhh, drives up the price of gas. Another self fullfilling prophecy.

Until its disallowed speculation on oil will always be our nightmare, that is until there is no more oil or they find the perfect replacement.

SALT WATER Power -- news from 2007 u might have missed.
Buy XOM on all dips >8%, enjoy the dividends! , Oh yeah, forgot, sell all rises >10% and wait for next dip!!! The ATM machine that keeps on giving. Fight back... jump on the oil ride.
No shorts allowed! Dress pants only. (?) The following is all precluded on the OIL discussion. Edit: "Drill Baby Drill" .... but I'd love to see the engine that runs off SALT WATER John Kanzius is also progressing on his idea ---- for cancer treatment. You can see it here! MD Anderson Cancer Centers are now supporting his theory and recently got on board to try to get to approved/recognized human trials. Very interesting stuff.... with the AUTO FUEL byproduct research benefit. http://www.kanziuscancerresearch.org/ Last edited by htron50; 02-25-2012 at 08:29 AM. |

Some funmy comments about the Mustang on this Tosh.0 Web Redemption "aren't you glad your dad didn't have a real sports car"? LOL
http://www.autoblog.com/2012/02/24/t...ion/#continued But I also must admit I do like the 2013 Mustang commercial. Seems like GM always gets in trouble when they use kids in commercials................but then again they are usually driving the cars in the GM commercials. http://www.autoblog.com/2012/02/24/2...ck-swan-on-us/
