I want him to build his car so then he knows all the hard work he put into it and he'll be more responsible knowing if he wrecks it all his hard work went to waste.

I say try Option 4. Get the V6 now, show your responsible and trade in for the SS next year.
Just know that life happens, while the conditions are right for the deal today, they might not be next year. |

Everybody says SS. I say get the V6 now. It's plenty of power and will be a looker just the same. I got my camaro for my 17th birthday. I say save some money and turbo or super charge the V6. That will bring you to SS power with V6 MPG. Plus V6 = more mod money
My brother will also be getting a camaro in September for his 17th birthday.

I don't care how responsible the driver is. The SS is too much car for an inexperienced driver. Arguably so is the V6. Experience has nothing to do with how mature you act (and I'm sure you can be very mature). Experience is the key, not just responsibility. My honest opinion is not to get either of them. Buy some beater car, drive it for a year, save some money. THEN get the SS. I know that if I were in your position, I would be DYING to have the Camaro. But my parents did the same with me (making me drive a beater car first) before they allowed me to get a sportier car. I will one day do the same should I ever have kids. My first nice car was my senior year in HS. I hated the wait, but it was probably for the best. There is a reason that insuring a car is so much more expensive for new drivers... statistics don't lie. Besides... if you wait for a bit, you might have some spare cash for downpayment. Maybe a couple of cosmetic mods. Maybe a new body style. Or maybe a new one of the current body style that they want to get off the lot because the next gen is released. There is just a lot to think about, and with cars... patience is a virtue.

Let's not hijack this thread into should a 16yr old have a new car, regardless of HP or camaro or whatever. Each person, family and situation is different, each have different perspective.
OP: It comes down to you and if you can deal with what you have to drive between now and next year. |

I'd be pissed if they said that. "your ass isn't even going to ride in it!" would be my response! Ok, not really, not to my good friends, but I'd be sure to remind them "remember when you thought I couldn't drive a manual, yeah, what now?" The kids got a 4.2 GPA. Yeah, his parents must be really stupid....
