Both rear shocks need to be replaced

I took my car to the dealership today because my car has been riding a bit rough lately. I found out that both rear shocks are leaking and need to be replaced. It is covered under the warranty so no big deal. I was wondering if what caused this was putting it up on jack stands for the winter? I do not take it on rough roads and the jack stands make the most sense. Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated. Thanks

DO you mean you keep the car on jackstands while its being stored? Like removing all load form the wheels/shocks.
Im not sure if thats necessary. But If you did do it Im not sure how that could be harmful to the shocks. Probably got a bad pair of course Im not expert.

Most likely just some bad shocks.

Average car 20,000 parts so if your car comes out 99.9% perfect, there are still 20 parts that aren't! Ya it's a drag but a simple quick and easy fix.

Placing you vehicle on jackstands does no damage to your suspension. It is no different than the car sitting on the wheels. Except your tires won't develope flat spots.

Hmmm.....I'm about to lower my car with drop springs. I wonder if in a couple months I had the same thing, took it to the dealer, and then they say "aftermarket springs caused the shocks to go bad.....no warranty work"?

Anyone think that might be the case?

Yep. It might be. I thought about that, but did the lowering springs anyway. Well worth it. Get sway bars while you're at it. I love driving on the twisties now!

Unless your dealer is super cool, they will most likely not cover the shocks. In that case they would have a pretty strong case in blaming the faulty shocks on your drop springs.

OP sounds like you just got a couple bad parts, doesn't sound like you did anything wrong.

It's up to the dealership, I'd talk to them and see what they have to say before doing it.

But both shocks, if you were to get a random bad part would there be two in a row? Maybe they were training someone that day in the shock factory? Or maybe the jack stands for the winter?

well in theory it works that way,, but you have a vehicle sitting on the ground for months/years, then you raise the car up, the wheels/suspension drop to there limits and you now run a part of the shock shaft past the seals that hasnt traveled that far,, the shock shaft may have corrosion or dirt built up on it from never traveling to its limits,, now the seals get wrecked.

it happens all the time with brake master cylinders,, someone blows a brake line, pedal goes all the way to the floor, you fix the brake line or whatever leaked,, then you bleed the brakes and find out the master cylinder seals are bad,, same reason as above.
