1979 RS Camaro
Maybe you all can answer a question I've had for years. I had a 1979 RS Camaro, fully loaded with T-tops. I wrecked it and when it was in the frame shop it was found to have a Z-28 drive train. Also on the doors upside down were to Z-28 emblems. I was the second owner and i'm pretty sure the first owner did nothing to it.
Now the question is, was this any kind of a special car or just another RS camaro. I think that the vin number indicating whether it's a RS, Z-28 or Berlinetta is the same regardless. Is this true? I found another 79 that states on the title that it is a RS/Z-28 with Z-28 drive train. And if there is such a special car i'm thinking of returning to my younger years. Thanks in advance for any knowledge on the subject Kevin. |

I just asked a friend who has been selling Chevys since forever. He doesn't believe there was a Z28 with RS package available in 1979. RS was a stand alone option. If you didn't have a 350, it wasn't a Z28.

it definitely had a 350, and all the badging for a RS, and for sure a Z-28 drive train and that wasn't all unexpected,,, it was the upside down Z-28 badges that were on the doors that led me to believe....
everytime I raced my buddy with his Z-28 79 that is, we always went through the lights at almost the exact ET |

GTSTOREY, thanks for the info, that's the same that I read which really doesn't differentiate from a sport coupe, RS or a Z-28 on the VIN code which again I thought was unusual.

A lot on how they filled out the build sheet .The could of have a Z-28 drivetrain but RS badging.. I have a 1979 Z-28 RS Camaro And I have the build sheets and other documentation . And at the time I bought the car I was wondering why it has all the extrra striping on it I have been told buy certain sites that there was no such thing . I just continue to enjoy the car no matter what other people think. And have built it the way I wish.Good luck to you

Not sure about 1979 but I had a 1973 split bumber LT with Z28 power train. Did not have the Z28 badging, however it did have the Z28 350, auto trans and rear gear ratio. And I think it was the first year you could get AC on a Z28 because they changed from solid lifters. But that was a long time (and about 8 camaros ago) so I may be misrembering. Great car, I think 245 HP which seems weak today but I wish I had never sold it.
