GM to shutdown Factories

GM to Shutdown factories because they are giving up on making cars people want. GM used to be an exciting company, now its run by a bunch of lackluster slackers who probably should be managing a McDonalds. Instead of using their brains to figure out how to build excitement the punkazzes just give up and close up shop bearing bad news at ChristMAS.

They should have kept a real car guy in there like Bob Lutz. No real legendary car people at the corporate level of GM anymore, only pretenders.

It makes perfect sense why they're doing this and it's been quite well explained. They're ditching cars that people don't want and most of those cars suck anyways. Would you rather they keep wasting money on something that doesn't sell as opposed to spending money on moving forward and staying competitive?

Yeh...its been well explained. But explain to me why a car company can't build cars that people want. No talent at the top running that outfit thats why. Get some real car guys in their with some enthusiasm, imagination and determination to make things happen. They were talking about this on the radio this morning and one of the financial gurus bought up the fact the GM lacks the ability to know how to market and promote their products.... Ain't that the truth.

Lutz stated GM should have eliminated many more cars back in 2008 after the BK. He was in favor of eliminating Buick.

Just because he owns a vintage Jaguar and helped create the Viper doesn’t mean he is just a car guy.

Cars that people want? Pleaseeeee. Just read some of threads that go on here. We don't like the rear tail lights, the 19's are ugly and many more. Everybody wants something different but, car manufacture are supposed to make something for everybody. People on this site can't even agree with what they want or like so, they complain that the manufacture's are at fault.

These plants would have to change their tooling every 6 mos to keep everyone happy. Buying habits and styling trends change constantly. The tooling required to make those changes cost millions and have to be added to production cost's. Manufactures also have to contend with government mandates, while also keeping up with tech changes. Now multiply that by the millions of cars produced and it seems an almost impossible task but, they have to do it every year to keep people buying their cars.

Gm is doing what they have to do and that is thinking forward.

Wouldnt you think by now that people would have learned something from the past. 2008 wasn't that long ago. Gas came down a little and everyone is back to buying trucks and SUVs. GM shifting focus back to these vehicles. This is primed to all come to a crashing hault again. Glad I didnt get sucked in this time around. Only difference this time for GM is that they are making huge profits on these very expensive vehilces. Hofully they are keeping some back for the lean times will be returning real soon.
It cracks me up at their excuses for these layoffs. If you believe any of it, I have some nice ocean front property in central PA to sell you. The economy isnt doing nearly as well as it may look right now. A lot of sectors are starting to go soft. In a couple of years GM won't be able to give away their 60 to 70 grand land yachts. My dealer friend dropped all of his new cars sales and shifted to all used cars and repair except for his Kia dealership. He had GM, Ford and Chrysler/fiat. All just used car centers now. He said it's much more profitable then new cars except for Kia. The big three are pricing themselves right back to asking the government for money again.

It seems to me gm is trying to avoid what happened in 2008. They are making changes and planing for the future now when they have money. For the future they are actually making major plans for self driving ev’s while in the now making money on the trucks, suv’s and cuv’s that people are willing to pay more for.

It doesn’t matter how cool a car is if young people don’t want to drive. The future for many is not owning a car and just summonsing up a ride when you need one. Once you take the driver out of an Uber car it will be very inexpensive way to get around.

How does Honda manage to have so many factories in US and they do fine? No union. Coincidence?


I am fine with them getting rid of vehicles that don't sell but building new blazer in mexico when it will sell for premium price is BS. Same with some of the trucks made in mexico

I understand GM reacting to changing demographics, increased demand for SUVs and crossovers, reduced car demand, etc. I'm extremely disappointed that they are closing only U.S. factories and a Canadian one. No closings south of the border where they take advantage of cheap labor. If they cared about the U.S., they'd at least make an effort to modernize some of the plants they're shutting here to keep jobs and production in the U.S. What a slap in the face to the taxpayers and the government that bailed out their once faltering company.

Because people don't want cars...they want Trucks, SUV's, and Crossovers. That is what is selling across all Auto manufacturers. Those that do want a car buy a Honda or Toyota Prius it seems. The GM cars don't get good enough mileage over their crossover line to warrant taking the hit on room and storage capacity.

And part of the reason for that is that cars aren't getting much advertising exposure at all. If you're lucky, you get a quick glimpse of a car during the typical Chevy or Ford TV commercial. Really lucky if you get any more than that (Cruze?).

I do wonder what'll happen should this truck/SUV/crossover binge soften and the suits finally realize that stepping away from being a full-line mfr and supporting it as such does have its downside.
