Market flooded with rentals?
Has any one else noticed this? I have been looking at 17+ Camaro SS' online, and it seems every single one is a former rental or fleet car. Most are still low mile enough to be within the manufacturer's warranty period. But still, unless it's a 1LE or ZL1, they all seem to be former rental cars. Last time I was in the market the 6th gens had come out, so there were hardly any available used, still to new.

Or 2SS. Some forum members have opined that a rental 1SS with a CPO would be a good choice.

My old '08 Sierra was a CPO, bought it in 2009, sub 10K miles. Had the 100K power train warranty, which apparently they still do on CPO. Which is odd because new GM is 5/60K. But they're still so new and low mile, most are sub 20K miles that I am looking at. So at best you have maybe 1-1.5 years left on the 3/36K and 3.5-4 years on the factory power train. Some of these cars are sub 5K mile 18s.

They usually keep cars in the fleet for 1-2 years. It was probably just time to swap out

Haven't seen many around here as they don't typically have sports cars for rent due to the weather. You can only really drive them 8 months of the year.
I can tell you that I rented a 1SS A8 car in southern California for a week back in the late part of 2016. That car had 2800 miles on it when they handed me the keys. It had 3100 on it when I handed them back they keys. I noticed that it had mismatched tires on the rear when I picked it up so it had already gone through a set in the first 2800 miles of it's life. The 2nd set were down past the wear indicators when I dropped it off and I felt the need to take it to a spray was to get all the rubber off the fenders and wheel wells. Moral of the story is don't buy a rental. I don't care how good the warranty is. I've literally seen air time in rentals on back roads. |

I rented a 2SS convertible in Las Vegas last summer from one of those super discount places for like $200 for a week. I dont think they realized how much the other places upcharge for the V8s. I reserved a mustang conv. or similar. They didnt have any other convertibles on the lot. I just happened to see the 2SS in line to be returned. Of course, the top worked intermittently (which i think there was a recall for) and it had wheels/tires from a 5th gen so who knows what happened to the thing before I got my hands on it. It defintely had its fair share of concerning rattles and a pretty constant clunk in the front end.

Living along the pacific coast highway, I can confirm the countless rentals I see. Convertibles mostly, camaros and mustangs, SS, RS ... all over the place.... gotta be a large share of the market.

Go to the monthly sales thread and read how GM has sold very few Camaros to rental companies.

I saw more Camaros on my trip to the Keys this weekend than I ever have in 2 days.
They’re out there. |
