some of the consensus here is that the zl1 will be 50-55k in price. what I was adding together was the price of the ss fully loaded which will be around 40k+ taxes and your package which is 29.5k. so the 70k is the total price when it is all included, compared to 55k for the zl1

Thats for the 700+ hp engine package. The other one starts at 22.5k. Content wise, I'd say a ZL1 will probably be equal to a 2SS/RS at around $37.5k, give or take.

So in my books, his ZL1 equivalent would come in at about 60 grand, not 70 like what you say (but not 50 either, which is were we expect the ZL1 to be)

I know I'm coming into this thread a little late, but I know how to compare a SS to a ZL1. The Nurburgring, what do you have to do to an SS to get a Nurburging time of 7:41.

Yes, one can build a 2010 2SS to match the performance of a ZL1 given enough time and money. However, it will be difficult to build a 2010 2SS that can achieve the same all around performance and driveability as a ZL1 for a cost that is less than or equal to the cost of a ZL1, and then there's the issue of the factory warranty.

My thoughts..

My Camaro has a little less than 50K invested in it, in both power and suspension and cosmetics.

And I'd be willing to bet that my ride quality is as good, and the performance is better than a ZL1.

Now lets guess a ZL1 can be had for less than 60K

with that in mind. what I'm giving up for that 10K difference in price is a warranty and the cool little components that make it a ZL1.. Even though I think having a numbered Tom Henry car is cool... It's probably not going to be as widely accepted as a factory built ZL1

So I may have a better performing car for less money.. I still am giving up some big things as part of that lower price.

would I trade my THR22 for a ZL1? no way... if I had both cars sitting in front of me and i had to pick one... that's a little tougher to decide...

anyway, the answer is yes, you can build a significantly better performing SS for less money than you will spend on a stock Zl1

With the anticipated $20,000 in price difference you can easily build a Camaro SS that will best the ZL1.

It will be interesting to see after the ZL1 is released if the car magazines will compare track, strip, and street, and overall performance and driveability results of a ZL1 with the results of a modified 2SS that costs less than or equal to the cost of the ZL1. They'll certainly compare the ZL1 to the GT500.

I'm looking forward to those comparisons like a hungry panther about to pounce on a piglet.

I think an SS can be upgraded to outperform the ZL1 easily if not cheaply. It may not be cost effective but you can recoup costs if you sell your stock short block and rear diff if you're going all out.

Plus, at least for me, its no fun buying something already done. I'd rather enjoy the build process even if it costs a bit more. I can say I built it, others can say they bought it.

At this point in my life I'm more interested in spending time driving rather than turning wrenches. Therefore, I'll purchase the finished product.

For me its therapeutic and gets me alone time in the garage when I need it. Luckily I'm moving some place warmer next year so I won't freeze to death working on it 4 months out of the year.
