2012 ZL1 muffler failure?

So has anyone seen this happen? This is the right muffler on my 2012 ZL1. Gonna call the dealer tomorrow and see what they think. Car is modded...

It's an issue with the dual mode.

Yup, you'll get a complete new exhaust. At least that's what they did on mine. However I was one of the first to take it to the dealership for the problem. At the time, they had never heard/seen such a thing. GM required dealership to take pictures and send mufflers to the engineering department. May be a TSB out now? All they did was replace mine, a month after they replaced, I noticed it happening again. Have not taken it in again as it does not seem to cause any problems (as far as datalog info reads).

Well it's looking like my mufflers will NOT be replaced under warranty since the car is modded and the dealer found no TSBs and has never seen this issue before. And I'm fine with the no warranty coverage but now that I'm looking at changing my mufflers possibly to aftermarket, I'm torn with the fact that I really like the dual mode factory mufflers. I've asked the dealer how I can buy the factory mufflers outright and still waiting to hear back.

just drop the exhaust cut the can's open and see if you can fix it. then weld them up. the welds to the top side of the muffler would never show.

the guys with Z06's used to cut the can's open seal off the perforated tube then weld them up to get more volume.

billy boat offers a dual mode aftermarket but it is not cheap.

this is a factory defect and there are documented cases so I would push back a bit. the fact your car is moded is not causing this even though they are tying to say it is.

I really like the sound clips of the stainless works exhaust though as well.

Why does one dealership cover it under warranty and another the dealership will not cover it? It seems pretty obvious there is a problem with the mufflers. I would contact GM and let them know my dealership is not willing to cover it under the warranty.

Sorry you had to come across this issue. There is another thread about it, I'd have to due some digging for you. But I was one of the ZL1s that had this issue and my dealership fixed it under warranty and ordered/installed a new exhaust.

I just got off work, as soon as I get off ill try and locate the threads with all the info you need.

Every dealer works a little differently I guess and I'm not upset they are unwilling to cover it under warranty. To be fair, they didn't say directly they wouldn't warranty it, they told me they needed to download my tune and send it to GM to get approval for warranty coverage. I repsonded by saying, "If covering this under warranty is based on a review of my tune, then never mind. Its not even near a stock tune!" To which we both laughed.

Lots of compliments on the car from the guys at the dealer though. They love it! It's all good. Not trying to pull one over on GM, Just not have my car look like it has a tampon shoved up its tail to all the Mustangs behind me!

I like hognutz idea!

I wonder if anyone has tried just pulling it out or snipping it off until it stops happening...
