Peg-leg burnout...kinda
Twice now, on the 3rd pass of a set of hot-laps, the diff on my car felt and sounded 'funny' and only did a 1-wheel burnout.
After having a chance to cool down, it seems fine. Is it possible that heat can cause the diff to slip rather than both wheels grab? Any suggestions for trouble-shooting? It might be a bit problematic to get my dealer to replicate this issue and fix it under warranty. Specifics: Stock 2011 Automatic SS (except it has a cold air intake) 18" MT drag radials 36 passes so far (18 w/ drag radials) Diff fluid changed at 1500 miles (13k total now)

Well an LSD requires an additive in the gear oil in order for it to work properly. Perhaps a fluid change would help? It's interesting that the problem went away once you let things cool down.
Are the noises still present? Was is just the right wheel that was spinning? |

Actually, if was the left spinning. From what I've read, the right is normally the culprit when someone has a single tire spin.
As for fluids, I did use the GM additive. But I'm considering swapping the fluid again just to see what will happen.

Reviewing the video, it appears that both tires were spinning....

This video was taken by my son during the event at Lapeer Dragway 11/3/2012. This shows what Three of Swords is talking about when he says it was only doing a one tire burn out.
I am currently down loading one of his two tire burnouts and will post later. One tire burnout. Two tire burnout

Are you sure that you got enough water on both tires before doing the burnout? I had this happen a couple of times and it was because of this. This is especially true if the tires were already hot and sticky to start with. The wet tire will spin and the dry tire will stick. As the tires cooled down, it made it easier for them to both spin.

Just saw the videos. hmm...
I guess I could be wrong about the burnout. It felt and sounded the same way as this spring when the crew member told me my right side wasn't spinning (I actually had to wait until the water drained off the tire). There was a low grinding/rumbling noise and a weird vibration. It could have been a water issue. They back you into the water pit, but if I wasn't lined up properly, I could have had very little water. And it was the 3rd pass. So the tires would have already been very hot. Next time, 3rd hot lap, I'll just dust them off and see what happens.

This is a very common problem w/ the SS. Once you get some DR's on w/ traction or higher HP you'll start to overpower the clutches in the rear end and get the one wheel spin. Ted Jannetty sells a posi mod that corrects this problem.

It's always my passenger tire that spins and the drivers that doesn't. When I leave the track the passenger bumper is covered in rubber and the drivers side looks like I just washed it :(
Gotta get that fixed over the winter.
