Thanks to the OP for starting this very informative thread. Since I just got my DA, I have some questions.

I've been using the GG 6" with a 4.75" BP for a week, just several hours a day. I use the Carpro velvet pad and M105 to remove some scratches and some of the factory orange peel.

Well, The M105 flashes pretty quick and I get the white patches and lots of dust. So, after watching some youtube vids, I began spraying the pad and the paint with detail spray before application of the M105. Now I can work the M105 much longer and no patches or dust. The surface looks great and now I'm wondering if I even need the polishing step. Any comment on polishing with Ultimate Polish after M105? Edit: I've done some some of the hood with Ultimate Polish and I can't see the difference between that and the M105.

Is there a downside to this technique?

I don't recommend the velvet pad for orange peel removal because it is very slow. But I can't recommend the denim pad because I haven't tried it. Any experience with the denim pad on factory clear coat?

Denim pad is much more aggressive, equivalent to 2000 grit sandpaper, where Velvet is equivalent to 3000 grit.

I've measured the total amount of paint on several Camaro's including mine. It's usually around 200 microns plus.. How much of this is actually clear?

No way to really know without a gauge that measures clear only, these start at around 2k, out of my budget.

The downside to removing a lot of clearcoat, is vehicle will be more susceptible to clear coat failure in the future, as it is thinner. Most of the UV protection is in the top layer of clearcoat.

105 is more aggressive then UP and will remove more paint.

If you want to proceed in orange peel removal, I'd stick with the slower process of the velvet, so you remove less paint, be very careful around the edges, in fact, if you can get some really small tape, tape them off, paint is much thinner on them and you can burn through it pretty quickly.

As far as finishing down, since you are using the Carpro Line already, Reflect polish will add more gloss to your finish. I haven't done orange peel removal on my Camaro, it's an un-garaged daily driver so no sense for me to, but here's a thread with results from Carpro Reflect and a Rupes 21 with Scholl Concepts Neo Spider "Honey" Pad.
