Thanks! I’ve seen that one but I’d prefer a private party sale due to tax savings.
Plus at mid 60’s I’d be shopping for a new one with discounts.

I think yours was priced perfect and I tried pretty hard to talk myself into just going with silver!

In Illinois the tax rate is completely different for private party sales. That said, I'm sure it varies by state.

Careful with that. If the "price" you write on the title is not at least 85% to average sale value, you may wind up with a nice letter from the IRS. Don't ask me how i know that.

Scary day.

How would the IRS know? I've written all sorts of values on car titles, even as low as $100. I've never gotten anything from the IRS (or the state for that matter).

"Average" value is meaningless unless the car is pretty new. Buying a car with a blown engine isn't going to be sold for average value but I've never had to answer a question..

And that's over probably 30-40 cars pretty easily.

Now, I'm not suggesting one lies when they register the car. To me, it's not worth the hassle for a couple hundred bucks of savings. But I've bought plenty of cars at well under "average" value (as in 5-10% of average value) and reported it as such on the title.

The IRS doesn’t care about sales tax. Some states will check your story with the seller if the price you report is below a certain percentage.
