Funny thing is, going from a 3.08 to a 4.10 gear in my Mustangs had no affect on the fuel economy at all. As backwards as that sounds, I'm not kidding.

OE gears are a compromise of performance, emissions, and economy. The faster an engine spins, the more exhaust byproducts are discharged. But, since steeper gears reduce the actual power demand of the engine, the economy is sometimes retained as intended.

Have you noticed any noise from the gears over the factory set? How many miles do you have on them now?

I want 4.10's, but it will have to wait. I had 4.56's in my 73 Z28 that came with 3.73's, what a nice upgrade!

Ok so I have about 100 miles on the gears now and decided to really get on it tonight....I just couldn't resist...lol. Man this thing pulls like a beast! 1st, 2nd, and 3rd are gone quick, were before they would wind up kinda slow.

With the stock gears at 70 I would down shift into 3rd to get it into the right power band, now I can use 4th and works perfect.

No noises from the rear at all. Everything seems perfect, I couldn't be happier!

I don't think so, they had all the right shims there as all they do is rear ends. However, they did install a new pinion seal and I'm not sure if they had that in stock or ordered it and had it ready for my appt. The end caps and stock bearings were all in great shape and reused. They did have bearing there just incase my were bad.

Im really curious how the new gears will improve your quarter mile times? Do the gears definately give you more of an edge on the street?

Very true...weird that you didn't see a change in MPG's with such a drastic gear swap...Maybe you had a lighter foot after the swap combined with a lot of city driving could balance out the MPG's? Either way it must have been a great upgrade

There have been claims of a gain of 2/10-3/10's on the quarter mile with gears only. Here's a nice article to help you with your decision:

It's all about mechanical advantage. Think of a 21 speed mountain bike, the 3 gears in the front attached to the pedals would be the same as the rear gears in your camaro. Let's call the largest gear a 3.45 ratio, the middle a 4.11 an the little one a 4.56. If you start from a dead stop in the largest or 3.45 gear it's going require more leg power to over come the weight of you and the bike or use more fuel. If you start in the middle gear or 4.11 it will be much easier on your legs or require less fuel. This is why some actually see an improvement in gas mileage with lower gears, because the engine doesnt have to work as hard. This will be especially true for those who do a lot of stop and go traffic. 4.11s get a bad wrap because in the old days of TH350 and TH400 trannys you only had 3 gears and 3rd was a 1.1 which meant at 70mph your enigine was screaming at 3500rpm and killed fuel mileage. Now we have 6speed gear boxes, 4th is the 1.1 and then you've got TWO overdrives after that, 5th an 6th. So now we get the best of both worlds, low end grunt and still maintain great fuel economy. :-)
