Hoosier A6 or Hankook Z214 for Auto-X events

Looking for tires for my 2010 Camaro and I’m wondering if the huge price difference between the Hoosiers and Hankook tires is worth it?

In order for me to go to these tires, I have to purchase a new set of wheels since the don’t make a good competition tire for the stock 20x9” wheels that come with the Camaro.

I’m going with an 18x9.5 wheel and will either be going with a 275 or 285 since I have major clearance issues with the design of my aftermarket PHADT coilovers and their reverse design.

My car weighs in just over 4200lbs without me in it and has a horrible under steer problem putting over 500hp at the rear wheels.

I typically run OSP, can I still run that class with the tire and wheel combination I’m looking at?

Trying to get this setup in time for the American Auto-X Series Larry Park Memorial events in Marina California in late September.

Think I remember talking with you at the last August event, I had the SIM LT Camaro running GS It was great meeting ya, thanks for the course tips! As for your tire situation, I can't really help ya there, but I've seen a majority of the SCCA Fresno Chapter vette guys along with others are running Hoosier A6 at the last event. Their cars stuck pretty good on otherwise stock suspension. Think we hit a course temp at around 110°F that day. I think Gary Mac runs those on his Z06.

Just an option for you.... I run factory 20x9's with Toyo R888 - 285/35/20's on all 4 corners. I have Pfadt coilovers and camber plates. 5mm spacers help ensure adequate clearance. My front camber is 2.1 degrees. Tires are awesome. I've pulled 1.5 g's at Road Atlanta in turn 10a and I can pull a consistent 1.3g's everywhere else. Plenty of Smarty Cam video to proove it! I'm still not happy with the overall combination either... simply because I know I can go to an afertermarket 18" or 19" and go with a 10" wheel and 295's all around (even with the Pfadt setup). This will allow me to drop 11 - 12 pounds per wheel / tire combo. Roughly 45lbs of unsprung weight or a perceived 900lbs of centrifugally rotating mass ("estimated" 1lb of unsprung is comparable to 20lbs at speed). Maybe over exagerated but still exciting based on what I read.

My suggestion is to discuss your setup with whoever is making your wheels for you. If you're going to have 18inch wheels made up, let them tell you how much tire you can run with your suspension as installed, any spacers needed, etc. I was going to run a square setup (in order to rotate tires, etc). But after talking to several track guys running big, staggered setups, that is how I went.

In summary, find a good wheel/tire company that knows autoX and road tracking and let them guide you thru your choices. You could then bounce their recommendations off of the forum here too.

I agree with Doubletrouble above. Don't be afraid to talk to Nineball. I think he has the market cornered on the 5th gen as far as knowledge of wheels / offsets. He will point you in the right direction. There are plent of other knowledgable professionals the site as well such as Eric at Torq. Eric is quite familiar with the Pfadt specific setup.

I ordered the Hankook Z214's in a 275\35-18 and 18" wheels that match my 20" wheels so I shouldn't have any issues unless the ~1" difference in where the tire is rubs on the PHADT coil overs where I will have to use spacers. I pick them up tomorrow and will install and heat cycle them this weekend. Thanks to all those that provided input, I will update all late next moth after the big auto-x events.

Hankook and Hoosier make 18" tires and Hoosier also makes the A6 in 19" sizes.

Bad news for me today, the 18" wheels that I purchased so I can run the Hankook tires do not clear the rear brake calipers. It's either grinder time to time to look for a different wheel that will clear the calipers.

The pads don't rub, it's the brake calipers that hold the pads. I hit them with the grinder this morning and all is fine.

Pics? I'd like to see how close the clearances are.

I will post pictures as soon as I get a chance. I had to order some longer wheel studs today and the only ones that I could find were made by PHADT for $165 for 10 of them. I did not opt for the lug nuts for an extra $90.
