Great Camaro story – to Abigail

I have four girls 3, 9, 11 and a 15 year old step daughter…No sons

Abigail is 11 and has many of the same interests as me, I am a Mech Eng. She wants to be one. This weekend I decided to work on the Camaro. Wire in the Fog lights (finally) and add some LED’s and switches to the engine bay and interior. Abby wanted to help. She always wants to help on small fix-it projects and home improvements, but this was serious stuff to her. She wanted it all, from shopping for parts, reading instructions to getting dirty.

We jacked up the car took off the front wheels, removed the wheel wells, removed the front grills and top plate (she wanted to paint it silver). Last thing was to take apart the center console. She removed every nut and bolt herself but the lugs (I had to start them)..She even put everyone of them back when we were done and kept them all organized all day (dad you are going to loose them)...she had to go to the toolbox herself and find the right size sockets and screwdrivers to use for everything..

Saturday was fog light install. Sunday was LED day. We ran, stripped, and cut all the wires, decided on a plan for LED locations and went thru it all. She is intelligent and more mechanically inclined then I could imagine.
She was soldering and heat-shrinking. It was 90+ degrees and she wouldn’t stop...I basically stood around with a beer and told her what to do.

Late in the day yesterday we buttoned up the last of it, and went for a boat ride on our little lake. It started to get dark but we had a blast.. After dinner it was really dark and we headed out…I gave her the honors of starting the Camaro and turning all the lights on.. Not only was she in awe of how cool it all looked, but there were double high fives by the dozens and wahoos echoing… I need to find a way to get some pics in the dark without flash washout

She can change a tire, handle a wrench, follow complex instructions, find a good ground, solder, disassemble and assemble just about anything. We started reading the Camaro5 DIY board together and are looking for our next project…

I Love you Abigail, my gymnast, girl-scout, honor student, bass fisherman….and now grease monkey.

Who needs a son
Happy father's day All!!

Going to the beach next weekend with the family, I think this weekend was better.

And yes, I have mentored a lot of Engineers in the last 20 years and an awful lot are book smart, with no clue...."Spreadsheet masters"
