600hp streetable? silly? thoughts?
I'm looking at purchasing a 2010 2SS Camaro with 81k miles. Car has a Tick Polluter Stage 3 street heat cam, headwork, stiffer double valve springs, hardened pushrods, etc. Spec upgraded clutch. Full exhaust, long tubes and 3" duals all the way back to Borla ATAK Mufflers, Vararam Ram air intake, and drilled/slotted brake rotors. Has a AEM air/fuel wideband set up as well and BMR strut tower brace...all done by previous owner around 20k miles ago. Has pics of the heads and flow charts from the porting. Car is an M6 with 511rwhp Dynojet, recently tuned by Straightline Performance. Should put it at about 600hp at crank with 15% loss.
My question. Is this silly to buy and drive as a 50% daily driver in the non winter months of Iowa?? Mileage will only be around 15mpg...not a huge deal because we don't commute much more than 5 miles. Should I look for a more mildly built car for reliability etc? Gotta have loudish exhaust on it for sure, but this may be a bit much. Here's a video. The car isn't perfect as it needs some front right fender work or possibly replace with another from a salvage yard. Gonna cost around $350 installed. other than that should be good. Supposedly never been to the track, however the owner installed a 2 step...lol. I've got him down to $16,000. That's as low as he'll go. Thoughts? |

Sounds good!
Just make sure you have good info on the maintenance. At 81K miles ask if he replaced the lifters when he did the cam swap. Other than that $16K is a good price. Here in the Houston area 600 hp is pretty much stock. Traction may be an issue with those tires though.

Does anyone have a similar exhaust set up? Is it annoyingly loud to passengers and others outside? Don't get me wrong, my Harleys have always been loud, I'm just curious before I make the 3 hour trip to drive it. thx.

Yeah, i'm going to do some youtube searches for the attak mufflers on built ls3's and see if i can get a better idea.... I'm thinking i'd be able to ease into the throttle in quieter residential areas... My 56 Chevy has Borla XR-1's and is pretty tame, until i hit the cut out switch and dump out of the headers....

Looks like a great deal to me. If you only drive 5 miles, I don't see a reason not to

Yeah whatever..LOL its streetable , I daily with more torque able to fish tail at with all nannies on at will, its all in knowing how to drive, and most likely inflated dyno anyway unless they sunk more than what you described into it, my last engine was a screamer and it was less torque more hp and more streetable. Torque moves you, HP shows how efficient the engine is making the torque and dynos well...they vary as do operators and if they look to inflate egos, and the 500 hp barrier is hard with out major $ to break compared to the average build and just porting the heads does not make much on a stock cube engine been proven pretty much, bumping compression does some help but you cant do much and its like not much per point of compression.
And anyway IMO, I would think about how its got 20k on those springs and how my tuner advises people to look at them at 25k to replace with high lift cams.....to be safe and not valve float or risk breakage..... Yup we are in the high lift territory where we have to change out springs eventually, and damn especially if you do overrevs... Good Luck what ever you decide, the more output a engine makes also usually means the more maintenance and care needed. And yes I use Driven racing oil ls30, and broke my engine in with a 8620 core with br30. I listen for anything and if anything sounds off I would have to say its park it and take off the valve cover to check the top end. A 2 step installed would make me wonder what shape its in...…..

I have a similar setup and it's perfectly daily driveable. If I'm not giving it enough gas below 1300 RPM or so, it'll start to buck. Other than that and it wanting to rev much more easily, it feels stock. FWIW though, my car only has 22k miles on it. At 81k I'd be concerned about reliability.
