Question Flip Key Replacements

Flip key snapped off the fob, was going to happen at some point. I have a spare key but am trying to order a replacement. They are pretty inexpensive on ebay. 2 for $16.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2-For-2010-...-/392983549167

Was wondering if it had to be an OEM key or not? Some reviews say they deprogram after a few days.

I read somewhere that people had issues with the trunk not opening on some replacement fobs also.

Was considering this one also for $50 which is OEM supposedly.

I had an aftermarket flip key, it worked great until the car wouldn’t recognize the transponder one day. Then I couldn’t start it at work. I had to Uber home and get my spare key. They are easy to program. Dealer has to cut the key.
I still use the cheap flip key, but I zip tied a “non-flip” transponder key under the car somewhere just in case it happens again.

So OEM it is. Yea I already had one made at a local locksmith as a spare. Saving a little bit on the cheap ones isnt worth a lockout lol

All you have to do is make sure the numbers on the side of the new fob match the numbers on the side of the old fob. And everything will work just fine

When I purchased my car it only had one fob. I ordered a blank one from Amazon (cut and programmed by a friend who is a locksmith) I think and it has worked fine since day one. The only issue I have is the trunk button would never program and it has never worked. Besides that the key works fine.

This is what I read that a lot of people had this issue with the non OEM fobs. Not sure of the real reason?

One day I couldn't find my keys, I only had one set. So I
called the dealer and can't remember what they quoted me but it was something ridiculous, and they said I had to have my car towed there. They also said that they don't do the flip open keys anymore. Then I called a local locksmith and he said he could cut me a new key on the spot. Just as he drove up my wife found my key so I had him make me a new key and he also had the flip open style. Cost me $175. But I haven't had any issues with it.

The GMC dealer down the road from me cut mine for free. Programming is super easy as long as you have a spare key.

You can take the electronics out of the old one and put them in the new fob...everything works, no programming.

Bought mine on Amazon in late 2016. Unfortunately the link is dead now, so i can't post it here. They look identical to the OEM ones and have worked flawlessly since I got them. Remote Start works too.

I cut the key blade out of the recall keys and installed them into the new fobs. They programmed without issue. Just search reviews until you find a set that are super reliable. You can find non OEM parts that work and last just fine, just takes more research.

I bought one of these off eBay a few weeks ago. Had it cut at a locksmith and programmed it myself. So far it’s been working fine. Mind you gotta know your code so the chip will work for your car.

I havent read the programming guide in a while but if its that easy can you just have these cut at home depot? Would be cheaper then a locksmith. Have the spare key and ordered the new one here:

https://www.carandtruckremotes.com/2...emote-key.html

I could put the old chip in the new flip fob but not sure if that would be a good idea. Better to just use the new chip maybe.

Link is broke and doesn't work.

As for cutting, these keys require a special side cutting machine which your normal hardware store won't have. When I was looking at getting a replacement cut a couple years ago, only 1 GM dealer within 100 miles of me could cut it and there wasn't any lock smiths that could. Ended up just exchanging the blades, they are only held on by a small roll pin.
