New JL Audio Subs for 16/17 Coupe

Just received this from JL Audio

It doesn't fit the Convertibles only Coupe
http://www.jlaudio.com/sb-gm-cam6g-1...ealthbox-94633

SB-GM-CAM6G/12W6v3
Chevrolet’s 6th generation Camaro delivers a powerful shot of adrenalin and all-American, classic muscle car looks. Unfortunately, its stock sound system lacks real low-frequency punch and definitely needs some help in the bass department.
This Stealthbox® is designed to produce powerful amounts of ultra-deep bass with minimal loss of useful cargo space. Its 100% fiberglass sealed enclosure houses a highly potent 12W6v3 JL Audio 12-inch subwoofer and neatly tucks into the driver side, rear corner of the trunk. Rear-seat pass-through functionality remains unaffected, and full access to the under floor battery compartment is retained. Also available in 12TW3 driver model.

The Hard Data: Contains one 12W6v3-D4 in a sealed enclosure. 600 watt power handling. Wired for a 2 ohm load. Installs in the driver side rear corner of the trunk. Minimal loss of trunk space. Black steel mesh woofer grille included. Installation requires permanent modification to the driver’s side trunk liner. Will not fit convertible models!

Unless it comes with a plug and play harness to connect to the Bose system without too much effort, I'll pass. For $765 I'd go through with the hassle of building a full on sub setup...

And bang for the buck, these Stealthboxes sound amazing. I do ALOT of the JL Audio enclosures and have YET to be disappointed with any of these.

Is this a non-powered unit, meaning I need to get an amp for it?

Yes it is a non-powered unit that requires an amp. You also have to cut into the side of your trunk liner to install it. So if you were to remove it there would be a hole in the side of your trunk.

Nice to see products like this emerging. Price, for me, is steep for a non-amplified unit
I would like to see amplifier solutions which interface to the stock systems without necessitating the loss of any functionality, including ANC.

I killed 2 W3 subs, at rated RMS. I wouldn't touch them again, I'm pretty sure Sonic Electronix would prefer I did too.

Excuse my lack of knowledge, but aren't ported boxes better for quality/loudness? I know a stealthbox is for saving space vs. a big box, but if we ignore space being an issue- isn't it more worthwhile to go ported?

Ported lets the cones move freely and can cool more. They reproduce a more "boomy bass". Sealed can sound tighter on bass more SQL. If done correctly though a ported box wont boom, they can be just as crisp. As far as worth while its totally an individual choice for the application.

You basically just need to follow the guidelines for enclosure design and amplifier power. An acoustic suspension (sealed) enclosure will sound great if executed properly.
