Maybe Fiat Chrysler can buy it and run it into the ground.

Estimated volume of model 3s by the end of 2018 was what - 300,000+? And that's just preorders. 2019 they start rolling out model 3 for the autonomous and high efficiency cab/uber/rent-a-car companies and completely take over their fleet of cars. Late 2019-2020 they have model 3s available on the showroom floor for customers to walk in and purchase at a preset, no haggle price. A car with that kind of performance, 8 year warranty, quality of worksmanship, and longevity at $35,000 will absolutely destroy the EV divisions of the other car manufacturers. You think someone will pay $42,000 for the Chevy Bolt when you can purchase a car that is hands down a better vehicle with way more advance technology for $7,000 less?

Right now Tesla's issues are production and exclusivity. You couldn't get your hands on a model 3 today if you tried. But IF they make it out of the next 12-18 months and figure out their formula - the EV share of the auto world is going to be staggering.
I agree that Tesla has a following that is off the charts and defies routine thought....I don't see any Tesla buyers, including those who may have to wait longer than anticipated to get their model 3s that they have put down a deposit on, jumping ship and buying a Bolt or anything else. Part of Tesla's appeal is that yes, perhaps Tesla will put the other "Big Three" out of business as a punishment for their past sins...lol...I don't think sales of other EVs have taken up the slack of Tesla's late deliveries...Tesla buyers will wait as long as it takes instead of using their money to support the Big3, or anyone else. I don't think any of them believe Musk will not deliver eventually...

Bash them if you want, but once Tesla's ball gets rolling, things will never be the same again. Musk will deliver.

But people have been saying that since the original roadster. Nothing has changed since then, except now they have other high-priced models, one affordable one that they can't build, and they're a little more familiar to the market.

The longer they take to bring those affordable cars to market...the more EVs other manufacturers will produce to compete. Bolt won the North American car of the year award this year, after all...not the model III.

Really hardcore Tesla fans remind me of early Apple fans...they're in love it so long as it's niche and "alternative". They idolize Musk like Apple fans idolized Steve Jobs. But once (if) it becomes mainstream, or once the idol steps down or is otherwise out of the picture, they won't be so gung-ho anymore.

As I said earlier - I like what Tesla's doing. I really do, without them, Volt would have never happened, and every EV GM makes is delineated from that architecture. I like even more than Tesla is an American company. But I think they're living proof that the industry is so big it's very difficult to just "start" a car company, anymore.

Tesla has already revolutionized the car industry. Everyone has reacted to his vehicles and he has already lasted much longer than many expected. I would be shocked if they completely fold. That being said I will also be shocked if he actually makes his production target with any sort of quality over the next few years. As others have mentioned Tesla already has significant quality issues with the expensive cars. Building a cheaper and higher volume model is only going to magnify those problems.

The apple comparison is on point. There are plenty of people who are who are in love with the brand and will put up with a lot to have a part of that. I think once the model 3s start making it into the hands of people who truly rely on their cars as their only form of transportation, some of the shine will wear off if the quality issues rear their ugly heads. We will see. Hopefully he values quality over the production goals. I don't think he can have both.

Tesla will eventually be a battery manufacturer and that is about it.

The only thing I wish GM would do with their EV's is make them look good. I think that is part of Tesla's appeal The Model S doesn't look like your typical EV or hybrid.

Also whoever pointed out the Steve Jobs/Musk comparison is spot on. I have an old friend who is a total Apple Sheeple, who is also wowed and just blown away by whatever Musk says.
