ZR1 Pace Car Crash Video
Poor guy, we added some sounds to lighten the mood since he's OK, but this is one phone call I wouldn't want to be getting.

It was a guest driver who is a GM official. He tried to get on it going over a hump and found out what 755hp is like on cold tires. OOPS!

Well, it's not like Mark doesn't know what he is doing.
Surprising something like that happened. He is a race car driver and an experienced Nurburgring driver.

I am in no way trying to armchair QB this, it just seems that the rear end hop that it took was not expected while he was on the gas. Really feel for him, he will not live that one down for awhile (I am sure his office is already decorated by his buds).

I was at the Detroit Grand Prix today-
- Enjoying the Day in the Chevrolet Chalet. ......................... Through the years I have met & know Mr. Reuss. Mark Reuss is a highly accredited, and accomplished driver. He has driven and has a proven record on World Class tracks. ............ ...Chevrolet issued the following statement: "We are thankful that there were no serious injuries. Both the pace car driver and the series official were taken to the infield care center, where they were checked, cleared and released. "It is unfortunate that this incident happened. Many factors contributed, including weather and track conditions. The car’s safety systems performed as expected." ................... Thankfully - Chevrolet Builds Safety - Becky |

Those who know what they're talking about won't think this but I know I'm going to over hear the know-it-all at Cars and Coffee explaining that the ZR1 isn't safe with that kind of power and the traction control can't keep it under control etc. Doesn't show well for the car.
Good thing Mark is alright. |

Well.... Mark and I talked quickly for a bit and he told me that he obviously knows how to drive better than most, but had he just not reached for his cell due to some hot chick's boobie pic that came thru while he was going into that turn.

I have a feeling that the car either had the traction and stability control turned OFF or the car was in "Race" PTM. I can't fathom how the car would lose traction so effortless like that with the systems very active, especially while not going that high of speed.

755HP on cold tires will spin a car out in a heartbeat no matter what nannies you have on. Add in that it appears he hit a bump mid turn while applying power there was no way the chassis was going to hang on with that much power being applied to cold tires.

It does seem to be an out of the ordinary surprise. He was not going very fast. Traction just failed to be his friend.

Any publicity is good publicity...lol...Probably more people now looking at the Corvette ZR-1 than ever before...The crash was a marketing stroke of genius....lol..
A couple of comments from other drivers who were there: "I felt really bad for whoever was in the pace car," Power said. "It's very easy to do, and the traction control must have been turned off. Wasn't really his fault." Added race winner Ryan Hunter-Reay: "That's a testament to the Corvette and 750 horsepower. I've driven one before and you don't want to jump on the gas. That's a fast car. It's something that can happen and the race hadn't started, so no big deal." |
