Wow this is insane. I will now be paranoid if I ever go out and park for an extended period.

My cousin lived in Oakland on the hill off of 76th Ave and had a 2014 SS for 7 days before they got it. Started it right up in the driveway and was gone. Found it 12 hours later completely stripped, including harness that wasn't cut from anything but properly removed.

Does all this mean my On Star is worthless for theft protection?

We met some friends 5 years ago that moved here in the country (Oh) from L. A. and they said, "best decision we ever made" and they were born and raised there. Not to knock L.A. it's happening everywhere but, less here.

The thefts I know about, every one was started and driven away.

Yes it does. Once the car is opened on star can be disabled in a few minutes.

They may also be spoofing it to unlock the door to begin with.

If there is evidence that thieves are targeting where you live, I would move, not change my car. If you can afford an SS, you can afford to live somewhere better with a garage Take care of that baby!

It's not completely worthless.

But if someone wants the car, they're going to get it. OnStar relies on a cellular signal and GPS locator, so as soon as those things are disabled, or powered down, the car becomes invisible to OnStar.

It will catch the average moron that is smart enough to "hotwire" and drive away in the car, though.

Most car thieves want an easy and quick car to steal. If the camaro SS is being stolen that fast and often then that means they 1) know how to get the car quick and easy 2) the ls3/ m6 is in high demand.
Just like ladies walking in high heels down a dark alley, there are things that can be done to make it more difficult for the cocksuckers that try to take your car. One thing would be to install a hidden kill switch. This will prevent them from driving off with your car. A GPS will help if its towed (also blocking in or making it impossible for a tow to get it). These camaros are fairly common, so then they will just move on to the next easy target.

What he said. Camaros are so common now best thing is to just make it difficult enough and they will try to move on to the next one. Most smart thieves wouldn't wanna sit there and try to play mechanic and figure why the car isnt starting or how to cut the power to the alarm if it's hidden. Once the alarm triggers they are gone with the wind most of the time

Some may say this is a bit over the top but I know it would work . Bring back hanging ,like in the old days . If you steal a horse they hung you . So if they would bring back hanging and add vehicle theft to the list of hanging offences ,there would be far less auto theft, and no repeat offenders ever. Car jackers would be whipped then hung.
