Power Steering Failure.

I went to leave my home, making a turn slow and the steering locked up. it flashed a check power steering warning and i immediatlely braked to stop from crashing into a curb/pole. I shut it down and started back up and everything seemed fine again. Started to take off again and turn and it locked up again. So i turned around went back to the house and popped the hood. I didnt see anything, and couldn't hear anything so i left again. I drove about 5 miles to work in a straight line. First turn i go to take it locked up again. Thank god i was barely moving. I stopped revved the engine and it freed up. So i turned into work and parked. Took off a couple hours later and it did it again as soon as i went to turn. So i drove to the dealer 1 mile away, it locked up turning in there, so i left it there, and they have been working on it since yesterday. No word yet on the problem. They said there is a note in thier system to check a wire in the wiring harness for the power steering pump. All i have to say i thank god it only did it at slow speeds. Because at a high speed, i would have died. I could not move the wheels at all by hand without the pump working, and i am by no means a small guy. And i simply did not have the strength to move the wheel.

really? I can trun the wheels on my car in my shop without the car runing. afer reading about these issue I had someone push me in the car and trun the wheels.

I wonder if when it goes into fail mode something changes. is the wheel feel different than when the car is just off??

these post kind of scare me even though I have not had the issue.

They just called and said it wasnt the wiring harness, and that GM gave them a couple of other things to check. As far as why i couldnt turn it, i dont know. I just couldn't move the wheel at all.

If you couldn't move it then maybe something really unusual was happening, like something binding up & putting stress on the system. Pure speculation on my part.

I'm glad you got 'er to the shop OK. I want to know what they find.

it has happened to many people here including myself when the car is fairly new. Mine occurred at 500ish miles and has never happened again. After a ten min shut off everything was ok.

I also believe this is how Cam totaled his car. Power steering failure at highway speeds on a curve or something along those lines.

Same here. That has happened to me also. Glad you are ok. Hope they fix the issue. Mine hasnt gone out on me again so I'll wait until the next service to have them look at it. Keep us posted. Thanks.

Steering went out and your waiting until the next service?

I'd have parked it right there and called a rollback. I refuse to drive or ride in a car with steering, brake, suspension problems... and hope others on the road would do the same. The car you slam into might be mine or my mothers. Get it off the road pronto, and the dealer better be reporting a safety problem so it gets its deserved attention.

Steering does not lock if EPS fails. Steering effort goes way up which if you are driving with one hands it may feel like it locks but it is simply that the assist goes out. With super wide tires like the ZL1 it is much more effort.

EPS is NOT steer by wire.
