yes, basically you get the car rolling, throw it in first, let off the clutch and crank the key and use the force of the transmission pushing the motor to help start it.

Hah!

'Fraid not.

You can put a manual in neutral with the key on and push it to get it rolling... Down hill helps a ton. Jump in and push in the clutch put it in second and pop the clutch and she'll fire up. obviously its easier if you have friends to push you but you can do it by yourself.

Edit: Dammit spike.... Beat me to it. and I was watching this thread too...

I remember doing this with my dad's '70 Nova a few times while I was growing up. My sister and I would get out and push while Dad popped the clutch to get the car started.

Thats crazy, I thought you just needed to put your foot on the Clutch when starting the car.

Pushing the car is for when the starter dies. If you've got an auto you're sol, with a manual do above. But don't try starting in first gear it doesn't move the engine fast enough, a higher gear would work better, however the instant the engine starts to fire up jump on the clutch or else you'll just stall it again.

Oh now I understand, thanks for the tips. This is always good to know.

The problem with first isn't that it doesn't move the engine fast enough; you could say that it moves the engine too fast. The problem is that it doesn't move it strong enough. I'd try 3rd on my first attempt to push start a car manually. In 1st, it will feel like you hit a brick wall and either your tires will skid or the car will just come to a dead stop without ever turning the engine.

You really don't have to turn the engine over very much. My VW will push start (or depending who you ask, bump start or pop start or kick start) in 5th all the way down to 14mph, maybe even 12mph. I, err, umm, may have done some experimentation, under controlled conditions of course...

The TR6060 has smaller synchros to accomadate wider more durable gears. Do a web search , you will find it.

I hope I don't offend anyone, but that wrestling video makes me laugh every time I see it. Thanks

If you want to have some fun and learn, just take any car or truck with a manual tranny to a hill so you don't have to push, shut the car off, while headed down hill, ignition on, in 2nd gear cutch on the floor, get rolling a few miles per hour depending on the vehicle, then let the clutch out. Hell, do it several times. You will understand push starting without having to push. Learn it now so you know it when you need it. IE: dead battery, bad starter or solonoid.
Some older automatics would push start at around 40 mph.

I will have to try that out, I think one of my friends has a manual car. Maybe he would let me try with it.

This reminds me of when I had a 944 a few years ago in high school, the battery or the starter would always die. It was kind of embarrassing having all my friends push my car out of the spot and block people from pulling out, then push it until it started. Those were the days... and I still miss that car.
