Before I got my CHE kit, I had a busted stock offset rocker arm, which was chewing the retainer up and its really a miracle the valve didn't drop.

Good idea = pull the valve covers and inspect rocker arms more frequently!

The truth. The fact is everything mechanical will not last forever. I try to maintain my car as much as I can minimize catastrophic engine failure. Be mindful of what your car is telling you. I did put about some miles on the rockers too.

How big of a concern is this... really? I started to get all alarmed the other day because I heard loud ticking coming from my car on a cold start. Started scouring the forums and listening to sound clips... I still don't really know what to think, but I did realize I was hearing the same ticking as always, just louder because I took the cover off. I'm still some where between panicking about engine failure and believing it's normal that the LS3 just has a noisy valvetrain

The concern is that with the valvetrain slapping due to unintended clearances so issues may arise. Such as metal in the oil as the trunnions wear. Needle bearings coming out that could cause possibly a dropped valve. Loss of hp...I would try to pin point the tick

Aside from actually taking the valve covers off - which I just don't have the time off work for - how would you confirm either way what the tick is?

I listened to a lot of clips trying to compare the sounds. It honestly sounds like a normal LS3 to me when compared to others. But then that's just my interpretation.

that is the first (easiest) step. Taking the valve covers off is easy. The coils all come off together. Takes no more than 10 minutes and you'll have both off. Have someone help you by pressing the accelerators pedal all the way in AND MAINTAINING IT THERE while cranking the engine over and you inspect both banks' valve/rockers/springs

With camera, video record each bank momentarily

Go back and inspect the video closely if you didnt see anything that stuck out the first time

Good luck

PEACE
That'd be me! Mine are still going fine after being ripped on a considerable amount of times (for no more miles than I rack up on her)

Also, haven't seen you post in a while Frank. Glad to see you are still hanging around here once in a while!

Taking the covers off isn't all that involved. And it will let you get a look and see if you have any lash, slop or damage of your rocker arms or springs. At that point, unless like you said, you don't have the time or are not feeling froggy enough, take it to a shop and see if the heads need to come off so that they can look at the lifters but hope that they don't, and if its to that point, bite the bullet and cam it and get new lifters, lifter baskets, springs, all the fixins. Whatever the combo, but if my heads were coming off anyway, maybe a port, polish and mill to bump compression, and down the rabbit hole you go... good luck though!

Those little devils..

And yes, the offset rockers are the worst. I am going to need to be on the lookout for my other rockers, given what already happened to me last month

Holy crap, that trunion damage!

Comps trunion kit is such a joke. Crazy that the leader in valve train parts hasn't caught on yet. It seems like a downgrade from stock.

I’m pretty sure I read an article were Comp didn’t necessarily acknowledge the issue, but apparently redesigned and improved their trunions. The early sets seem to be the ones with the issues.

Mine were purchased and installed in late 2015, and were fine after inspection at 1000 miles, but like I mentioned earlier, I swapped them for CHE bushings.

Anthony.Martinez, when were yours purchased and installed?...Miles??
