From what I remember the 400’s can in a short and long variations an where mostly big car, station wagons, and trucks.
My Grandfather had a 70’s station wagon with a 400 cid small block and a 400 trans setup from the factory. My dad installed it in a 69 Chevy truck that a 4.11 straight six an man you couldn’t keep the tires from spinning.

You can add overdrive to a th400, but they do not come with it. They are 3 speeds as was stated

Overdrives are overrated....
Guys that have already posted about the th400 not having an OD gear are correct. Th350 and th400 are 3 forward speed transmissions.
Th350 is 2.52/1.52/1.00 ratios
Th400 is 2.48/1.48/1.00 ratios

Surprised to hear that about RPM. Always thought they were one of the best. Their quote was pretty high, but it has 300mm input and mainshafts. Other less expensive quotes show stock shafts.

Going to stick with the 1000 HP rated field.

I dont know squat about transmission building, and dont want to be yanking the trans in and out all the time. Which upgrades should I be looking for while getting quotes?

The site says level V is OEM blocking rings and no bronze fork pads. Level VI gets you the 9310 main shaft. GForce makes those shafts, but they have an exclusive agreement with RPM. None of their builds include new gears.

J.W Performance Transmissions is right here in Brevard, but there must be a number of good shops around Bradenton.

I've had a few TH400s back in the day. I think a good set of clutches and input shaft with a decent valve body goes along ways on those things. They are pretty stout!

I had turner racing transmissions out of Dayton Ohio build mine. It's nothing special. Stock shafts, bte promod drum, extreme automatics vb, and billet adj rear servo. Right at $2k for the rebuild with my core.
