If they catch you in Virginia....

with a radar detector do they take it on the spot? I just got a Passport ix and would prefer not to lose it when I go up there.

I just threw mine on the back floor upon crossing the state line. Yes they can take it, your rights in a car are less than in your home.

Just unplug it, and put it in the trunk... otherwise you'll lose it and possibly be fined! They run radar detector detectors for that purpose... and they aren't real friendly when they detect you having one either!

Legally, yes, but only if it was used. You can legally own one but cannot use it (for people traveling through). I have a cousin who owns one and his Dad keeps it hidden, but they live out in the country. Keep it in your bag and they shouldn't have any legal reason to take it.

I think California is probably one of the worst spots to own a radar detector.... with that said, when I got stopped for speeding and the cop cited me for tinted windows only, he noticed I had a radar detector (wasn't plugged in)... He just looked at me, I just grinned back. He let me go after that, lol.

I guess it depends on whether the cop is having a bad day or not, a lot of times...

actually by law they are not allowed to go in your vehicle without your permission or a warrant, or reasonable doubt of drugs and stuff: (search and seizure laws)....

All they can do is FINE you and just give u awesome tickets.
If they physically take it from you then you an go to court and try to fight it...
Might as well just have it turned off.

dah.....That's because the only reason to own one is to break the law.

I would partially disagree with this statement ... it is "plausible" that a radar detector is for awareness. If it goes off, you check your speed to insure that you are not over the speed limit (or speed you care to chance) to be sure you didn't slip up an coast over the speed and set yourself up for a ticket. I've been lucky a couple of times and wish I had that warning even though I was intending to be at a steady 5 over ... luck has been with me so far..

I am pretty sure that you are not allowed to have the radar detector in the passenger compartment in Virginia, put it in the trunk to be safe.

and for nickster, they are illegal in VA, if they see it in the car, that's enough, I think its likely to be gone.

Really? Never really bothered to check, lol

I always dreamed of a system built into the car ,x,K,KA,laser detectors, active and passive jamming.

All the good stuff , with sensors installed in the body ,top ,front, back, left and right.

Oil slick, smoke screen, chaff dispensers , flares.....

Coming from someone who used to live in Virginia and DID get stopped with my radar detector.. YES they did take it. Even when I saw the lights come on I pulled it off the window and hid it in the door pocket. First words out of his mouth...after license and registration was "where is your radar detector" they do have radar detectors detectors and USE them If you don't wanna lose your Passport don't use in til you cross outta the state border.
