ENGINE SEIZED!!! WTH????
Hi all!
I'm new to the DFW area and I am in need of some advice... I was driving to the airport a couple of weeks ago and my 2013 SS died unexpectedly driving down the road. No smoke, bells, whistles, knocks, etc. without any warning. Had the car towed to the nearest dealership in Grapevine north of the airport. I was informed the engine has seized and was quoted a repair bill of $10,500 to make it right again. Jaw hit the floor. Naturally, I wanted a second opinion... So, I had it towed closer to home to have a trusted mechanic in Waxahachie take a look. A little better news, but out the door would be $9,000. I am not able to fix the car financially. I owe another year at the bank which rounds out being about $7,000. With all that being said...I want to ask a couple of questions and get some feedback... 1. Has anybody had this happen to them and if so, what are the details regarding the fix? 2. Is there an alternate route I can take repairing the car, i.e. shade tree mechanic that won't charge dealership prices? 3. What is the car worth at the scrap yard? I am going to be very upside down either way I go financially. I am very seriously considering cutting my losses if I can get a couple thousand bucks at the scrap yard. One of the mechanics offered to buy my car for $3,000 at one of the shops I took it to, and a buddy of my offered to buy it for $2,500. Am I really going to be hosed here? 4. I owe $7,000 on the car. The repair bill will be $10,000 for a grand total of around $17,000 worth in my pocket book value. The car has 120,000 miles and has been meticulously maintained, but it is no where near worth the value after the repair...Can I get some opinions or options from all of you, good, bad, and ugly advice? My car is currently parked at my home and is being used as a lawn ornament. I need transportation in a hurry! Thanks in advance for any advice... |

Very unfortunate. Options: fix it then sell it and recup some, or run it down a hill into a tree. The engine was fine before lol. Or just cut your losses

What exactly is wrong with it? Its a bit strange that a shop quotes you that amount of money and didnt tell you what they have to fix.
You could buy a long block for about the same money.

There are several clean engines here in the classifieds for sale right now. That's your best bet. Labor to drop and swap an engine should be no more than 1k tops.

That Sucks and you dont have a lot of options but it makes sense to fix it imo. A 2013 SS is still worth some decent money with low to moderate miles and you can buy a complete used motor for $3500 to $5000 on ebay
"IF" you could swap the motor yourself and cut your miles in half (or by a third) for $3.5K to $5K, you would be much better off on the resale side. Example of Motors on eBay 60K miles for $3465.00 43K miles for $4500.00 41K miles for $5225.00 Good Luck U.B. and I agree that it may make sense to find out exactly what went wrong before making any decisions...

You might also want to call Jeremy Clark at LSX Unlimited. He is in Alvarado and his shop is growing quickly. They specialize in all things LS related. I bought a 65 C-10 they built probably about 5-6 years ago and the truck was awesome. Since that build they've done a ton of LS swaps and performance builds. Jeremy can probably help you source a good transplant, or maybe even repair what you have... you may just need a rebuild which is a great time to upgrade internals and add some performance parts without spending more money. You can look them up on facebook under LSX Unlimited or give him a call. He is located at: 705 Percifield Trl Alvarado, TX lsxunlimited@gmail.com 682-472-6349

crate engines new are around 6500$, you need to find some cheap limp by car and then fix it to get the $ out of it, people low ball you on a broken auto...…… and most likely your a automatic and had a AFM failure but your not talking......and a AFM crate engine is more and AFM is bad.... A crate engine would come with new everything including intake manifold etc etc and most joe dirt guys could install it.... however if your a AFM l99 automatic you may want to buy a used engine or a ls3 and modify to eliminate AFM ….and then your spending on Headers and cam etc etc.... and say the value of the car is around 10k with engine broke due to mileage, a new engine would of course make the value up above 20k, so its your call, my call would be to a local crap car lot for a 100$ payment eco turd and then TSP texas speed and performance...good luck.
With your being so vague as to the condition of the car, opinions are going to be widely varied...….....and maybe wrong...…..
