What is the "buddy system"? Have a friend accompany you whenever someone sees your car for sale? I don't know of many friends who would drop everything to do that on an ad hoc basis!

Another method is to take a pic of the people/license plate/driver's license who go with you on the drive and mail them to someone and state that is what you're doing.

This is just the random act of some a-hole. You're probably 1000x more likely to drop dead of a heart attack or have someone shoot and carjack you on any random corner than what happened to the poor guy in this story. The suspect in this case looks to be well off, and come from a good family, and apparantly is just nuts.
Hopefully he gets convicted quickly and rots in jail for the rest of his life. But he won't change the way I sell used cars.

About 10 years ago a guy in my town was selling a mint 56 Chev. Some guy called, said he was flying in to look at it and could the guy meet him with it at the airport (local non-commercial airport) so he could look at it. Guy met him at the gates and knocked him out and took the car. Neither was seen from again.

It's like saying "BEWARE! Avoid going into the gas station in case someone comes in robbing the place and holds a gun to your head!"
