Oil Pressure Warning - Recurring Issue After Fixes
Vehicle: 2011 Camaro 2SS/RS M6 - 67xxx miles, bought brand new.
Tonight as I started my car, I got the 'Oil Pressure Warning - Turn Engine Off Now!' message in the DIC. This happened to me about 6 months ago, and I had the Oil Pressure Sensor replaced ($440) at the dealership. FF about 3 months and I got the warning again. Took it to the dealership and they diagnosed the Oil Pump had failed. So I had that replaced ($1800). So tonight was quite the surprise, with no warning after having driven the car at 10:30 am this morning to get to work, to go to start the car tonight to go home and to get the Oil Pressure Low warning. Called OnStar and they ran a diagnostic and all came back good. Oil level is good, so the only thing I can think of is the gauge cluster is now faulty and sending a bad signal to the DIC maybe? Just don't want to run the car like this. Thoughts anyone?

Doubt it's a bad pump after just having it replaced. Even if they F'uped seating the pickup tube O ring during the install, pressure problem would have occurred sooner. Guage gets it's reading from the sensor same as DIC so could be the sensor again.
Get a $20 Bluetooth OBD2 reader and a phone app like Torque to see what pressure the OBD2 shows. If low then replace the sensor and recheck the pressure. If still low then get the dealer to replace the pump just for the cost of the pump. Another thought, could be clogged oil filter. What filter are you using? Was it replaced when the pump was replaced? |

Got the final diagnosis. When the oil pump failed, the camshaft ran dry enough for some flakes of the cadmium coating to chip off, and contaminate the oil system, hence the oil system being clogged, causing the low oil pressure warning again.
The #8 camshaft lobe was scored and damaged, and the lifters were damaged as well. Had to have the camshaft replaced and the lifters as well. This has become a very expensive repair. GM offered $2000 assistance, but was another $2500 out of pocket this time. The car is running fine now, but, at cold start, it is very noisy. Clicking/Ticking noise. Once warmed up, the noise goes away. I wonder if the lifters need adjusting?

There is a TSB on the oil pump. You should not have paid anything at all!

I don't believe it's even a TSB - it was a prelim info dealer bulletin IIRC.

Here is an early version of the PI. I believe this is just a 'heads up' for the dealer to get aimed at the corrective action.
PIP4158C: Low Oil Pressure Due To Seized Oil Pressure Relief Valve - (Dec 29, 2009) Subject: Low Oil Pump Pressure due to Seized Oil Pressure Relief Valve Models: 2008-2009 Buick Lacrosse, Allure (Canada Only) 2007-2010 Cadillac CTS-V, Escalade 2007-2010 Chevrolet Avalanche, Corvette, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe 2007-2008 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS 2007-2009 Chevrolet Impala SS, Trail Blazer 2009-2010 Chevrolet Colorado 2010 Chevrolet Camaro 2007-2010 GMC Envoy, Sierra, Yukon 2009-2010 GMC Canyon 2008-2010 Hummer H2 2008-2010 H3 Alpha 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP 2008-2010 Pontiac G8 GT 2007-2009 Saab 97x with the Following Aluminum V8 Engine RPOs: L76, L77, L92, L94, L99, L9H, LC9, LH6, LH8, LH9, LS2, LS3, LS4, LS7, LS9, LSA, LZ1 The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI. Condition/Concern: Some customers may complain of low oil pressure, no oil pressure, and/or engine noise, which may be the result of a sticking oil pump pressure relief valve. In some instances, this may occur intermittently if the valve frees up when the engine cools down. Recommendation/Instructions: If SI diagnosis isolates low mechanical oil pressure at the oil filter housing and oil pressure sensor, replace the oil pump, flush the oil cooler lines (if equipped), clean the inside of the oil pan, change the oil and filter, and re-evaluate the concern. Notice: If an engine noise is noticed after replacing the oil pump, follow the SI diagnosis and repair the engine as necessary. Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. |
