Is my rear end going out? UPDATED

At first I thought it was my new tires making the noise, but today I realized that the noise I'm hearing is only coming from the back of the car. At first it sounded like I was running truck mudder tires, but now it's a definite, LOUD howling from the back of the car and it's speed variable - the faster I go, the louder it gets. But if I'm in a turn, it quiets down some.

The car has just under 140K, I don't do burnouts or hard launches (I just drive fast).

Any thoughts, ideas or options? Thanks.

Wheel bearings? Axle? Ring and pinion?

What that mileage my first guess would be a wheel bearing. Is it quieter when turning both left and right or just one direction? If you end up replacing a bearing I'd do both as they other is likely close to its end of life as well.

When was the last time you changed your diff fluid?

Could have a seal that went bad and you leaked out the fluid.

I changed the trans and the rear end fluids at around 50K to AMSOIL products.

90k miles is a long time. Did you check the level of the fluid in the diff?

Definitely pull the top plug and reach in to make sure you have fluid in there still.

But if you haven't noticed a leak, I would do a drain and fill and then see if the noise is still there.

Well, I've made myself paranoid thinking about how loud it was today (my mom and I had difficulty TALKING it was so loud), so I'm driving the wife's beater Exploder. I'm not going to drive the car again until I take it to the shop. The last thing I need is for my diff or a bearing to break loose at 80 mph on the highway.

I'll post what it was & how much Thursday evening.

Mine does it in all 6 gears - at highway speeds, it SCREAMS. The more I think about it, I think it's the left rear tire/bearing. I can hear it window up or down.

Yeah that does sound more like a bearing than the diff.

On a side note, only in a car forum of guys is the question "Is my rear end going out?" appropriate...
