V6 oil consumption and levels

Just a curious question for the LLT crowd. I've read a few posts about low oil/oil consumption and dry dipsticks lately.

Has anyone checked their oil with the oil fill cap off and still had this problem? I was just thinking about the various types of engines (mainly diesel) that I work on that show very low oil levels on the dipsticks but when the oil cap is removed, the pressure bumps the oil back to the proper level on the full mark.

I would hate to see someone really overservice the engine, if was to occur with the V6.

Chime in if you think this is a possibility or not.

I have checked my oil level several times now after reading the same thing. I have yet to add any oil between oil changes. In other words, I am not seeing any loss of oil in great amounts.

I'm at just about 3K miles, and it looks like I have lost about 1/4 of a quart. No worries with that.

I've gone through less than 1/2 qt the last 10k miles, but I check often now.

I've never had to take the cap off to raise the reading.

I use about 1/4-1/2 qt by the time the OLM reaches 50%. I personally know a few LLT owners whose engines seized up due to low oil levels.

Motors that lost 3-4 qts under normal driving with no tell tale signs like leaks or overly smoky exhaust.

According to the manual (4-32), your supposed to get a "Engine Oil Low- Add Oil" message in the DIC and/or the oil can idiot lite stays on (4-25) if low on oil.

The people above never saw either warning, makes you wonder why and if they even work.

My engine doesn't seem to consume any oil *knocks on wood* but I change it with Mobil 1 every 3k miles.

It REALLY is strange about a couple qts randomly disappearing..

Ditto, my oil level barely moves, maybe 1/4 qt in 3k miles.

No pressure issues on the LLT as far as checking oil level. Engine off and sitting for at least 5 min will give an accurate reading. ALWAYS check oil every few fill-ups on ANY vehicle for good measure.

From what I've gathered, these couple of oil missing related engine failures have snuck up on the owners. I never heard if the cause of the disappearing oil issue has been dicovered, anyone have any ideas?

I believe in every case thus far, the owners were relying on the DIC to tell the, of oil condition and level. Keep an eye on the stick and all should be good.

Yep - old school. If you drive a sports car like a sports car, fluid changes and inspections are done far more often than the average.
