Lightbulb Does our car have a black box recorder?

I'm taking my car to the dealer today because my clutch won't disengage. I'm wondering if the car has that black box thing that records speed and other things. Just worried they will void warranty if they see I have had the car up over 100 before just likemany other owners lol. I drive safely...but you know, gotta feel that power atleast once.

they do, but they aren't data loggers like say the Nissan GTR. They are usually accessed only during a catastrophic failure or accident. Why would driving over 100mph void your warranty?

I have heard that driving speeds like that over the speed limit is considered racing which voids the warranty. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Yes. All new cars have had them since the early 90's.

a) they only record when you get in an accident and even then they only record a small amount of time just before the accident, varies from 30 seconds to 90 seconds depending on make, model, and year.
b) dealers do not have the ability to access them. In fact the majority of the time they have to be sent off in the rare case that they do need to be accessed.

Actually, if GM followed suit with Ford, some data can be accessed by a qualified tech with the correct scanner. A friend of mine at Ford told me they used to play games and place bets to see what top speed was hit with patrol cars when they were brought in for service, then they would access the car's system to see...

Dealerships have the ability to see your last 99 starts on your car. I was with a tech at my dealership looking at the engine files looking at the RPM ranges when we were trying to figure out the clutch issue with my car.

How does a black box know to turn on 30-90 seconds before an accident? That is an eternity in an accident. Unless you meant milliseconds?

I believe it does not turn on at the point of the accident - it just keeps a stream of data flowing through memory and when an accident happens it takes the snapshot of what has been in the datastream for the period immediately before the incident.

It might be a continuos loop that shuts off after some pre set limit is reached such as a high g force thereby preserving the last events.

I don't think the box turns "on" it is probably set up to keep 30 to 90 secs of information stored in memory and continually writes over the existing data (Once the memory is full it starts recording over the last 90 secs). I'm not positive, but I bet it starts recording once the car is started. We have products at work that do the same type of thing so if there is a product failure we can see what the conditions were prior to the failure. Again, this is just a guess, but it seems logical to me.
