Contacted Chevrolet Today

For kicks I completed the web form at chevy.com to complain about the problems I've had with the transmission in my 2SS. I told them I didn't want compensation since I've voided the warranty via mods, but the transmission issue is serious and many people are unhappy as evidenced by discussions on various internet forums.

Well, within 4 hours of submitting the form I received a call from GM. They asked for the technical details on the problem and which forums people are using to discuss it. Lets see if they do anything about it.

I encourage everyone else that has had this problem to contact Chevy as well. Hopefully they'll issue a service bulletin.

See the thread on 2nd gear grinding.

At 2000 miles I had to have the 2nd gear replaced along with some other parts($1,900), just a couple weeks ago I replaced the entire transmission because 2nd gear was beginning to grind again ($4600). I replaced it with a Level 6 TR6060 from RPM transmissions.

Jeff,
I bought my 2SS/RS Camaro as a hobby car, as such, I've made several modifications including having the PCM recalibrate. So, I'm sure I've voided any kind of warranty GM offers on the car. With that said, I'm certain the transmission was defective from the factory; I had only 2000 miles on the car when I had to have 2nd gear replaced and 4,100 miles just recently when I replaced the entire transmission due to 2nd gear beginning to grind again (the inspiration for my moniker ).

Anyway, I don't expect anything from GM for me personally, but I do believe GM should resolve this issue before it becomes more widely known and damages the Camaro brand. Of course, if you want to send me a check for the $6K+ I've spent dealing with a grinding transmission I certainly won't say no

Technically I believe the problem is the responsibility of Tremec as the manufacturer of the TR6060. If you browse the Mustang forums you'll see that GT500 owners are having similar issues with their TR6060's. In fact, the problem is well known as indicated in this article: http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/g...nsmission.html

I have bad grinding going into reverse unless I push the clutch in and wait for the input shaft to stop spinning, or if I shift into a forward gear before going into reverse to force the shaft to stop moving. I think it happened after I tried to force the shifter into reverse while trying to grab 5th while "briskly" accelerating. I think the reverse syncro is damaged.

It happened before I did mods, but now I have a cam and tune done, so I figure the warranty won't cover it. I may dig into it myself if I can source the correct parts. Until then I'll have to live with it. No other gears have issues though, just shy of 8K miles.

I took my car in to the dealer this Monday for the grinding issue, but have replaced the stock shifter with a Barton short throw. Dealer told me to put the stock shifter back in and that would fix the problem. If it didn't then they would look more in depth. Funny thing is I scheduled the appointment before installing the shifter and told them I was installing it. There is definitely a grind when shifting to 2nd and 3rd. I hope that Chevy does the right thing and issue a TSB on this issue.
