LS3 Power Upgrade Kit (From GM; comes with OEM ECU tune!)

Here is the instructions manual for the kit:
http://www.chevrolet.com/content/dam...t-19301990.pdf

Highlights:
  • GM Cam (LS7?)
  • New ported heads
  • OEM ECU Tune!
  • 7100 RPM redline!
Quote:
This Camaro LS3 power increase kit consists of all parts to replace your existing cylinder heads and camshaft, along with
the documentation to have the engine calibration changed at your local dealership. The new calibration change will allow
your engine to spin up to 7100 revolutions per minute (RPM).
Quote:
PACKAGE CONTENTS
Qty Description
2 HEAD-LS3 CNC
1 CAMSHAFT
1 SPROCKET CAMSHAFT
3 BOLT-CAM SPROCKET
2 GASKET-HEAD
20 BOLT–CYLINDER HEAD
1 INSTRUCTION SHEETS
1 E.O. LABEL
2 PLUGS FOR CYLINDER HEAD
2 EXHAUST GASKETS
1 BOLT-DAMPENER BOLT
What do you guys think? I am especially interested in the 7100 RPM redline. It would give me a lot more flexibility in some of the corners, since especially with the shorter Z/28 wheels/tires, I run out of RPMs much sooner.

I've also read somewhere that it should be good for 50+ HP, but I have a feeling it should be more than that.

I wouldn't buy this specifically but I'm interested in hearing about it.

I'm sure you can get a mild 3-bolt cam and get BTR supporting mods and be able to spin 7k+ reliability and gain over the 30whp.

But 1700 for ported heads, cam and supporting mods is a pretty good price. I'm sure you'll pay out the a** for labor on this if you go through GM.

I think the kit comes with a work order code for free tuning done at the dealer. I would do the install myself anyway. I just can't trust cams from aftermarket suppliers. Anyone I know from the track venues with aftermarket cams have eventually lost their engines with no exceptions so far :(

The tune is probably pretty safe and a lot may be left in the table power wise with that tune. Which isn't a bad thing.

Good point but who knows, its a shot in the dark with this cam too. Not many people have this package so your sort of venturing into uncharted waters. LS3s are pretty well known to have oil pump failures so the cam or an aftermarket cam may not be the problem to worry about.

Like I said I'm extremely interested in hearing about somebody actually doing this package. I'm just giving you some stuff to think about

Aftermarket cam kits come with other supporting mods as well, pushrods, Z06 timing chain and so on. Plus 50 hp, I doubt it. Why don't you install 3.42 rear end to get back that stretch in gear?do you have an ATI harmonic balancer?

I've been waiting for Chevy performance to release something like this for a while. I thought they decided not to release the tune for the kit? Maybe that changed recently.

Interesting....I've been looking for a set up friendly for track work, and that price would be hard to beat if you did your own install and the tune was included. The tune must canned, huh. Can't see a Chevy dealer doing a custom tune or making adjustments to torque management tables, etc....

I looked for the specs for the cam, and can't find it. I imagine it's fairly mild, but do you know what it is?

It looks like they added a GM tune to this kit since it's the same P/N: http://www.karlperformanceparts.com/...mponents/45580

If I were to do this I'd skip on the tune since it wouldn't be optimized for my other mods (CAI, headers, HFC) and I do my own tuning. I'm guessing 40 HP from the components and another 10 from the GM tune if you remember reading 50 HP gains? That might not seem like much to a lot of guys but they are also comparing it to more aggressive cams that won't stand the test of time in a road track car. I'm in the same boat you are - want to do a cam but leery based on other's experiences.

Doesn't the .591 lift assume the 1.8 rocker ratio on the LS7? LS3 is 1.7 rocker arm ratio, I believe.

Nice find X25!

With a tune now...interesting.

Wow! I never noticed that 121LSA before...and I thought the 116LSA on my stealth cam was conservative lol.

Just called my local Chevrolet performance part dealer. They were not able to confirm a 50hp increase. The part # that does not include the ECU tune only state 40HP w/o tune. Which many of us have known about. They are going to get back to me on what the tune includes but I am not holding my breath. The parts counter guy thought it was alot of money for just 40-50HP. I told him I agreed but that if it didn't void the GM warranty then it was worth it to me. They are suppose to call me back regarding the tune details. The parts counter "tech" stated warranties are on a case by case basis. Not excited about that kinda' language. If I don't get it in writing I wont do it!
