I didn't think that there were any issues with LS3s. There will be individual cases among factory made cars though.

This seems to be the one issue that has cropped up here from time to time. My understanding is it affects all 5th gens regardless of year and is caused by debris left from the milling of the block. I'm sure its a low percentage mind you but I have read a number of cases on here over the years all the same. |

This always seemed to be coupled with guys going to a bigger cam and not upgrading/replacing the factory pump
Can't say I saw many factory LS3's with oil pump failures during my years here.

Thanks guys, for the additional responses.
Looking at the 2014-15 window stickers posted here as well as the various others I've seen, it seems that between 2013 and 2014 GM shifted complete assembly or at least the major component sourcing of the engine from US to Mexico. I would assume that was intended as a cost-cutting move. Are there any particular years that had the machining debris/ oil pump failure more than others? Most of the cars I've been browsing so far have at least 20k miles on them. Seems to me that if an engine had the metal shavings problem (or other serious issue) it would have reared its head by 20k miles. You all agree? |

2013 LS3 , she's just about to crack 30k; I've had the glorious pleasure of her company for four years. 4 oil filters, 1 set of tyres, diff oil flushed and replaced. Not so much as a fuse or bulb has failed. Still on original battery and clutch (despite pushing almost 700 horses) Best car I've ever owned - abso****inlutley no issues at all. Go git sum.

Chriscam I think you are overthinking this. The LS3 is a great engine really no matter what year. Go with the one you like most in terms of looks
My 2013 engine was made in the US

LS3's were probably GM's cash cow in terms of performance and reliability. If there was an overarching reliability issue that affected most of them, you'd see a thread believe me, and I'd happily buy another LS3 or L99 powered Camaro without a second thought. They're stout machines, GM did a good job with them

Thanks again guys, for all the comments. I was a little concerned about the drivetrain reliability between the 2010-2013 vs. the 2014-15 models (with the latter possibly having some issues that the former didn't have), but with all the positive feedback coming in (not to mention the 'How Many Miles on Your 1LE' thread that's posted in the 1LE section here)-- I'm feeling much more confident that any of the Gen 5 LS3 or 1LEs would be equally as reliable.
I'm now really leaning toward a 1LE in particular-- not necessarily for the added handling capabilities, but more for the styling. I really think the 1LE (and the ZL1) represent the best iterations of the Gen. 5. |
