Track Insurance

For those of us who track our cars, do you opt to get Track insurance or take your chances to go without it? I went without it on my first track day but now debating whether or not I should or shouldn’t get it. Thoughts, comments, concerns?

I have been taking track insurance for 8 years. Never had an incident.

Of course, I can now never stop doing it. We all know that the one time I don't have insurance, an incident will happen.

I think it is worth it for the peace of mind. One of the reasons I sold the Corvette and bought the 1LE was to reduce the track insurance rate from ˜$400 to ˜$250/event.

I do, both the car and Liability. If your older and have assets (big 401K, house equity, etc) good idea. Father was CEO of two insurance companies and explained why. I use Carol at ontrackinsurance.com. $500 for five events.

I never do an event without it.

I used to use lockton, but last year switched to RLI.

I’m doing Track Night In America, the one they offer is $2xx for the night so wasn’t sure if there was other options out there, or ones that are better

I always take insurance, the rates will be different from track to track.

If you are worried about cost let me throw some numbers at you.

$40k policy 10% deductible, Summit Point Raceway

Lockton quotes me $240 per day, from what I have heard Lockton is underwritten by RLI.

RLI quotes me $275 per event.... up to 3 days.

Ontrack quoted me $675 for 3 events...

Seeing the trend? The more you buy the cheaper it is and that goes for track time too, if you look at single day vs 2 day events there is an enormous savings there too.

No, Lockton quoted you $240 for the event. No carrier currently offers a by the day rate (I just verified this with Bri @ Lockton). This has been a complaint of mine for a long time, insurers charge the same for a 1 day event as a 3 day event, makes no sense to me. I use RLI as well. Yes, packages defintiely save $.

I told my friend that I only do weekend events because of the insurance costs, he told me Lockton does single day insurance. I didn't believe him so I went to their website to check, I was indeed able to get all the way to check out selecting 2 individual days of the same event. I have a picture on my phone somewhere from where I sent it back to my friend laughing at him. Maybe this is just a result of a dysfunctional website and what you are saying is true but I have proof showing individual dates of the same weekend.

RLI's website quoted me $209 for 1, 2 or 3 days at COTA based on a $38,000 value and 10% deductible

So are they just doing actual value, or agreed upon value where you can up it to replacement cost?

Never used it myself but the track I run at has a good base of regulars that don't get stupid. Some of the videos I see on here would have me pulling off track and leaving...to each their own lol

That's a good rate, I wish I could get rated that low for a single day, Summit is famous for their deer strikes. YouTube Summit Point deer sometime.
