Thinking about driving my 1SS in winter

Hi guys. I know this question has been address before but how realistic is it to drive a SS all year with winter tires. I live in western Michigan and there is a good amount of snow. On days when it snows bad I can always drive the wife's SUV as she does not work. My major concern it clearance in the front and "snow plowing" with my front lower grill. No after market splitter in place.

Also when purchasing tires on tire rack do I need to also purchase a new tire pressure sensor for the new tires or can a shop just use the old ones. (I know kind of a dumb question)

Thanks!

I would consider All Seasons like DWS06's before winter tires to be using all year. As for the sensors you should be able to swap the ones you have now onto the new tires without a issue and re-calibrate it.

I know it's not quite the same but I drove a 2000 SS M6 for 5 winters in Cleveland, The first 2 with snow tires on the rear only and the last 3 with 4 all season tires. Only 1 time did I get nervous and that was on ice on the interstate.

I have Michelin Ice 3 and they are great. Use them on my G8 GT and they help. Being in Western Mich I would get them or Blizzaks...

Thank you for the comments. It sounds like the best bet is obvisouly snow tires.

What about the fear of the front splitter being a few inches from the ground. Should I have any concern of damage or snow plowing. Again when there are several inches expected I can take my wives car.

The reason why I ask bc I keep on debating about spending 2-4 thousand on a winter beater vs. around 1500 on tires and rims for the SS.

Thanks.

The snow plowing is what will keep you from driving in more than 4-5 inches of snow. Take the SUV then...

I live in North Dakota with plans to drive my SS all year round. It's fine as long as you have proper tires. The best thing you can do is buy another set of wheels and winter tires. I bought a set of the LT OEM 18" wheels for about $480, then I bought Blizzak WS80s, tire sensors, and the OEM body colored splash guards. Everything was around $1,600. My motto, if I'm driving my $40,000+ car, I want the best tires I can have for the condition. All seasons can work, but you won't be the safest.

The tire sensors can be purchased for like $30 a sensor, don't buy those from tire rack unless you have to. TR is charging $80 a sensor.

I recently bought some sensors from Costco for $15 a sensor.

Winter tires are best but I do have Conti DWS 06 all-seasons on my 2wd truck that sits pretty low and I've driven it in snow 8-10" deep with no issues. I'm sure dedicated winters are better but the DWS06 is a solid year round tire.

I have the same dilemma! A 2-3k beater, $100/month lease or spending 1600 on winter tires+rims. I have already hydroplaned a few times while driving in rain, and don't have much confidence honestly driving it all year round.

The thought of getting a beater/lease and not being able to drive it for the next few months scares me ...Only tire rack seems to be offering winter tires for the 2017 C6 SS.

In 2 weeks I'll be putting a set of nokian hakkapeliitta 8 studded on my camaro. From what I gather they're one of the best winter tires available. I'll post up pics when I get them on the car.

I had Hakk 5s (studded, of course) on my 98 Trans Am for 5 winter seasons. They're awesome tires. Proper tires and a helical rear diff meant that I could take off faster than half the "SUVs" on the road.

I bet the 6th gen, with all the fancy electronic goodies, is even better.

Do any issue come from running those tires on merely cold dry ground? NY winters are so varied. Sometimes we have super snowstorms and sometimes we don't have anything. Those look like good tires but I can't decide between those and Blizzaks. I also want to get a set of wheels for the winter tires.

Perhaps look at Nokian hakkapeliitta R2. They aren't studded but have these little grippy nuggets in the compound. I'm not affiliated with nokian or anyone but I just feel they're a very trustworthy reputable tire.
