First startup soon after winter - advice?
Hey all! So I'm looking for advice on the first start for my '22 ZL1.
I want to make sure I don't cause any issues considering it's brand new lol. Here's the story. Bought it late November (Got lucky and found a dealer near me who had one in stock). Drove it roughly 200 miles home, and then it started snowing so I garaged it and hooked it up to the oem chevy battery tender. Garage is uninsulated so it felt all the cold). On my 2010 mustang gt I had, I would pull the fuel fuse and crank the engine with they key for a few seconds to get oil pumped up on top of the crankcase after sitting for the winter. On the 2019 1SS I had, I only had it from March to September last year so it never got winter stored. How should I do it with this car? Do I do the pull fuse method? Considering this is push button, how does that work. Will the car keep cranking and cranking if I hit the button and it doesn't start or will it stop cranking after a certain point? Is there another method I should do? I've heard about the issues with lifters, tick, etc etc on this car and oil is the key to longevity. I would not like to start the car with it being dry on top of the crankcase if I can help it. Any tips is appreciated. Thank you! |

FYI, if you are concerned with oiling the motor after long periods do the following:
Hold down gas pedal to the floor before starting (hold clutch too if manual). Car will turn over but not inject fuel, this is called flood clearing mode. Release the start button before releasing the gas pedal. Now you have turned the engine over without starting. These cars build oil pressure so fast I'm not sure I'd be concerned with this but this is much easier than pulling fuses!

My take is don’t overthink this. It is not an exotic race engine. Just start it. Let it idle for a couple of minutes and then drive it at low rpm’s until the oil temp is up. After that enjoy the car.

I've been storing my cars over the winter in unheated garages since the 80s. I just fire them up in the spring without doing anything special. I have never had any kind of problem.

Can you please elaborate about the issues you heard about the lifters, tick, etc, etc? Only real issue the ZL1 has ever had is the oil pump for 2017 and 2018 year models.
I don't think I've ever seen anyone on here talk about the lifters or any ticking on the LT4. |

I just started my ZLE after sitting for over 3 months without a battery charger or tender at all. All the car has done is sit under its cover. It started no problem and we have seen temps as low as -20 here. Maybe worse. It fired right up. I wasn’t worried about oiling issues. I’m a mechanic by trade so I have absolutely no reason to believe there is any special pre start instructions I guess before starting it after sitting over the winter. Just start it I say.

Just start and let it idle to get it to operating temperature and you should be good to go. No rocket science here. As soon as possible I would put fresh gas in it though and take it for a spirited drive.

Garage isn't insulated? It's toast, total loss. I'll take it off your hands for a cool $12,000....

I agree with "just start it".
My 2010 Camaro was stored for 6 months every winter for 13 years and I always just started it in the spring. It never burned any oil during the 80,000 or so miles that I owned it, so I think the effect of dry cylinder walls was negligible. Yes decades ago people used to fog their engines with oil through the spark plug holes before storage but that was then, this is now. Modern materials and finishes have eliminated the concern. |

And if you’re still concerned, just do the flood process by first putting your foot on the brake then gas pedal then push and hold start button, it will crank at the least 30 revolutions. just like the others suggested . I just did it and the second the gauge registered after starting it was showing 40 or 275 kpa instantly
