The reason I brought up the ZR-1 is specific.

IMO, that is the car that started the Second Horsepower War. It was faster than any version of the Corvette made prior to that, even the big blocks.

The second horsepower war is not over. This has a lot to do with why digital cars are not normally collectible. The first horsepower war had an end, ~1971. After that cars got slower every year. So enthusiasts pined for the "old days", and started wanting those cars.

In my experience, only time will tell if a car is truly "collectible". Assumptions can be made but only time will tell.
I believe there was such a time.

1969 - 1970 426 CI Hemi's in almost ANY street form. Cuda, GTX, Roadrunner, etc. etc. They were the Cat's Meow back then, the preferred drag stuffed car, and the monster on the street. And, folks who had them know they had a brute collectible. Sorry for those who may disagree, but if you lived and breathed back then, you know I'm right.

At the drags the 440x6 usually beat the Hemi's cause many guys had a hard time tuning the Hemi. However professionals could get the Hemi to perform well. Also with the Hemi the power came on late.

^This^

The 440ci/375hp had a wider powerband and about the same torque as the 426ci/425hp.

Both made for high 13 second cars at just over 100mph trap speed.

Only when you "tweaked" the Hemi did it outperform the 440. Hot Rod threw on some headers (open), jetted it, adjusted timing, removed aircleaner, and ran low 13's at 109.

Now, that was certainly not stock, but let's pretend it is.

Both the LS1 era Fbodies and the Hemi Chargers weighed about the same.

The LS1 era Fbody was 346ci/305hp-320hp. Mine ran low 13's stock at 108mph.

Mild tweaks had it running 12.5x at 111.x mph.

Anyone STILL believe the HP ratings of the 60's were correct?

Well a few things at play. In 1998 both suspension and tires are far and away better than anything in the muscle car era.

Take a 3500lbs car (approx of a road runner in 1970) with that HEMI - that is 354whp. Typically i find that automatics take about 100hp off of the flywheel to the rear wheels

So 450hp.

I think the motors made the HP but i also believe there was some "fudging" going on. The other parts of the car however, just suck.

A few years back a Pro Stock racer by the name of Max Naylor was having a hard time competing with the big boys in Pro Stock like Jeg Coughlin.
He made a simple switch - ditched his goodyear slicks for hoosiers and qualified #1!!!!

Same setup other than tire and he went from nobody to king of the hill....for a few races. Then NHRA banned using tires outside of the regular Goodyears.

So, only 2014 is limited production. 2015 is build-to-demand as many here suggested would happen. I personally thought they would limit the build so I was wrong about that and I accept my helping of crow. GM is a business and one that has, and is, facing a many challenges (as are nearly all manufacturers), so it's perfectly understandable that they would build as many as can be sold.

The good news for enthusiasts is that now you are not risking a $100k+ collector car to take it on track and it is now a commodity as any car would be and prices on used ones will be reasonable.

As much as I am unhappy future values will not be through the roof, I am more happy to know there will be a bunch of these on track to play with
This is great news to me. So it won't be a collector car garage queen after all. Drive those Z/28s on the track!

Hemi's weren't all that. In the real world a Stage 2 Buick was a faster car. And easier to live with. And much better built.

The reason hemi's are so collectable now is "back in the day" nobody wanted one so not many were produced. And during the gas rationing era hemi anythings sat unloved on used car lots just like any other big block car.

Didn't ZL1 Camaros and L88 Corvettes best the Hemi's?

I gave up on collector cars a long time ago. You sit there and watch it for years. Bring it out for a concours every few years so people can oh and ah, and never really enjoyed it. Run the heck out of it. The smile factor will be much greater

Auctioning a car through eBay is simply a dealer's way of letting the market decide the final price. Note the two Z/28 auctions listed to date are "No Reserve," so just one bid over their posted price = Sold.

Other than that technicality, those two cars are sold, we just don't know for how much.

i no longer use ebay because of dreamers who click "buy it now" or bid up an item only to bail.

Then i have to deal with ebay to get fees removed and relist.

Those cars are not sold until money exchanges hands.

I can bid 85k on an ebay example and it doesnt mean i bought it. It could also mean the dealer has a second account and bid it up just to get the ball rolling.
