(help) what grit sand paper to use

hey everyone, i hope your all having a good valentines , im stuck here alone since my GF is 2 hours away for school , valentines couldnt have chose to land on a more crappy day. :(

oh well enough of my misfortune. im planning on doing some weekend paint project.
i will be painting my engine cover/fuse box and 4 gauge cluster.
i was wondering what grit sand paper to use on each piece.

just to make sure it sticks when i paint.

I usually use scotch pads. The red or the white are good grits. The grey is too coarse on those. And the green scotch brites should only be used for pots and pans imo.

The proper way to do it is to use 320 or 400 to sand it smooth, prime it, block it out smooth again usin 320 or 400, then work it those scratches out using 600 and then i will usually go ahead and wet sand it using 1000 (helps the paint lay a little smoother). then dase coat clear coat.

Once it's sanded you want to use an adhesion promoter so your primer/paint sticks better.

Yep, the best way. How we do it at our collision shop.
