How about gas mileage?

Anyone know final numbers or has this been brought up? Higher gears....higher gear ratio...higher gas mileage? Or, did GM keep the higher gears the same to keep the good gas mileage?

Curious.

Don't want my good gas milage to go to shit.

I finished my install yesterday. The gears are as quiet as my original gears! Silent. I will be breaking them in over the next two weeks, so I won't be able to drive it really hard. The difference in initial take-off is amazing. There is no more chance of inadvertently lugging the engine, it just goes now. I don't expect my gas mileage to go down because I can actually use 6th gear now. The rpm difference on the highway is around 2-300 rpm at 80mph.

IF you can keep your foot out of it mileage should not really be affected. You might have to slow down a few MPH at cruise.

Exactly...In the three 4th gen LS1 camaros that I've had, I ran 4.30 gears in all. I suffered little, if any, loss of fuel economy while cruising at 70 (and all were Head/Cam'd). Like was mentioned, gears make 6th usable so It's unlikely that 3.90 gears will show any noticable loss at all.

Of course I would like to do gears in my 5th gen...but I'm wondering if 3.90's are really even worth the trouble and expense? That's barely a 12% increase in TM. :(

I made the costly mistake of going with 3.73's on my first LS1 Camaro back in '99 (8% TM increase) and regretted that decision immediatlely. Coming from the world of 5.0 Mustangs, where 3.73s were the perfect ratio, I mistakenly assumed they would perform similarly in my first LS1 based Camaro. I was wrong. Perhaps my butt-dyno is miscalibrated but 3.73's (with an 8% improvement) is almost imperceptable. I found 4.11's to the minimum ratio acceptable and 4.30's to be optimum.

Based on those experiences and the fact that I intend to drop a cam in soon (which will certainly demand gears), I have concerns about 3.90's.

What was your total cost for parts?

I just got word from MaureenM@RodgersChevrolet that she's got my 3.91 gears ready to ship.

It's going to be first come, first serve and I already got dibs on set #1, so if you haven't gotten your set yet, I'd PM her real fast.

So, if I were to order these gears for my 12SS, what exact part number(s) do I need and what else do I need (i.e. install kit).

Actually, she said these gears are on backorder with no ETA.

Then it sounds like all the sets she was able to pull in are spoken for already. Glad I pulled the trigger and had mine reserved before we got the confirmation (although there was only a slim chance that the 1LE gears would not fit).

I'm just waiting for LPE to figure out their going to lose out big and lower their prices. Can't be smart marketing leaving the price at 800 when dealers sell them less then half that.

I paid 250 for gears. They came with ring gear bolts, crush sleeve, and pinion nut. You will need posi additive diff cover gasket and a quart of fluid. I bought an install kit but i was able to reuse my pinion shim and side bearings shims. You can get by really cheap. I always set up ring and pinions with factory shims first to see where I'm at. These gears are top quality and set up perfect. They needed no adjustment from where the factory 3.45 gears were.
