turbo 4-manual vs 8spd auto?

Hello everybody,

I was going to be looking at some Camaro turbo 4's tomorrow and i just needed some quick info about the auto ones. Last time i looked at a turbo car was around 20 years ago. I was looking at FD RX7's, MKIV Supra's, and 3000GT VR4's. With those older turbo cars i remember people saying that the auto tranny versions weren't all that great so i stayed away from them.

So with the Camaro turbo 4 is the same thing true of manual vs auto? i was wondering about not only performance between the two but also if any issues will come up when i start modding the auto to like 350-450 or more WHP. I'm doing some quick googling to find out what info i can but i also thought i would post on here. I needed an answer kinda fast since i'll be going car shopping tomorrow and this weekend too.

thanks!

I'd say go manual, idk about the i4 but on the ss the a8 is slightly faster in a straight line but not enough to really matter stock. The a8s have converter shudder issues, which apparently is easily remedied now days but the manual tremec is solid and wont give you issues. Its the same tremec used on the gt350. Just my 2 cents.

Lots of shudder issue with the A8 trans... I personally got the manual and don't have any complaint.

I have test driven an A8 and really didn't like the feeling. The shifts are very slow and my girlfriend even said that the car sounded like a lawn mower...

I’m not sure what camaro you drove but the ‘16 ss a8 I rented had the fastest shifting auto I’ve ever driven. The 1-2 shift felt like it got rear ended. There is no way anybody with a manual is coming close to that unless they are abusing the living hell out if it.

Edit:oh wait you might be talking about the one with the 4cyl, yeah I’d be hesitant to buy that

Anything with 300hp or less is always way more fun with a manual.

I can tell you that even the V6 with 335 hp is faster with the auto vs manual trans. Just the gearing alone is significantly steeper. Combine that with the faster shift time, and it will beat the manual every time. I actually ran one from a guy I met at a local car event. I wanna say he said the stock gear was a 3.27 if I remember right.

But, the MLS is pretty awesome and makes the shift go pretty quick when done properly.

I'm not a manual guy per se, have the A8 as well and thoroughly enjoying it, but NLS in capable hands is pretty darn amazing, see example here:

Well, considering this is posted in the 1LE forum, I'd suggest a manual. I had a Turbo 4 rental with an auto, and I found it to be quick but laggy.

4 cylinder Auto does not have an LSD, to take into consideration also...

Doesn't look like you can get the turbo 4 1LE with the auto anyway, so I'm not sure why this is being discussed here in the first place?

FIRST since you posted so close to the SS nether regions you can see the turbo envy up close. you should be scouring the I4 section lower down.

clearly OP is after budget and modability so if you like to tinker the I4 M6 is the way to go. There isn't a huge 400 hp+ aftermarket out there just yet... you'll be needing a tune and some bolt ons to get into the 30-40 percent increases, easily had for a couple grand. . 2018 2T M6. Never mind the rental stories, this car moves just fine with a couple of tweaks, and - you can leave the $25K ego at the door. SS price premium is roughly 2K for each MPH more at the quarter mile. SS 113 @ 12.5 (real world) vs 2T 103 @ 13.6

drivers car, autoross, driveway add-ons - M6
Mash the gas and add-ons - A8
