Weird Smell, Sounds and no more AC
Ok, So today I was driving my 2SS quite aggressively as I normally love to drive as such on nicer days; today was a high of 87. Alight so on my way home I started to smell a smell you don't want to smell, especially from your car. I smelled it and assumed it was my environment around me(I was in the woods, so it wasn't likely). Then after about 2 minutes of driving, I come to the deep, sad realization that it was my car. It smelled as though it was melting plastic or rubber, just a nauseating smell. I finally get to my house and I am able to hear the car at idle and I notice this strange light squeaky hum and identify it as a belt. I look to the lower pulley and see rubber that is thrown on the metal below and around. I identified that as my smell and sound. When I started the car back up I noticed that the AC was no longer working, the fan was pumping warm air into the cabin along with more of the smell until the rubber cooled. I took the car out on another trip today to see what was up. No more smell, but I do hear the belt and am currently without AC and I was wondering if anyone with more experience than I can identify the problem. I have an appointment with the maintenance department to look at it on Monday. Thank you for your time and thoughts.

Sounds like you smoked the belt now its slipping and not turning the compressor at the minimum RPM it needs to to pump correctly. Or, maybe a piece of the belt caught the connection to the AC clutch and the compressor isnt running at all. Hard to say with the limited information provided.
Oh, and do you really think you needed to have three threads on this top? Lol. |

A/C runs on a secondary belt I believe. You probably toasted that one.

Why would you want to abuse your car like that? All I can say is you brought this upon yourself. Hopfully you learn a lesson (it might be an expensive one).

Could also be a seized compressor which ruined the belt.

A little confused. I thought these were performance cars and designed to be driven as such. Don’t we all drive them somewhat “aggressively?”
I guess it comes down what is “aggressive.” Some hard back-roads driving with the AC on? An occasional 1/4 mile run at the local drag strip? Is it reasonable for the above to damage the AC system? Seems a bit fragile if that is the case. For the people who track their cars, do they disconnect the AC or remove the accessory belt? Trying to understand what the line might be between “hard driving” on the street and abuse.

A/C does not have its own belt, everything runs on the one serpentine belt.

Well in your defense I didn't look first either before I posted the opposite , knowing that my old LS1 Camaro (and our current WS6) ran an accessory belt for A/C, I made the assumption. I may have come across as arrogant in my response, my apologies.
