You can give Chris a call at GForce1320. He has the dimensions for the SST driveshaft with the 4L85E/9 inch combo.

alright bruce, now ur pissing me off..lol...been researching the 4l80e and now you have to post something new...have to ask , after searching 4l80e for 2 weeks...what the hell is the diff between the 2??? i do not see much about the 85..other then th 20lbs tq...and i would think that after building the 80e for perf that it is good...is there any config diff that would benefit going 85e?

-4L80 Specs:
440 lb-ft (597 Nm) (MT1) Maximum Engine Torque 885 lb-ft (1200 Nm) Maximum Transmission Torque (output) 4L85 Specs: 460 lb-ft (624 Nm) (MN8) Maximum Engine Torque 885 lb-ft (1200 Nm) Maximum Transmission Torque (output) From GM Website: OVERVIEW The Hydra-Matic 4L80 and 4L85 are close-ratio four-speed automatic transmissions that serve the heavy duty truck market, full-size vans, as well as school buses and motor home chassis. The 4L85 was added as a heavier duty version of the 4L80 for the 2002 model year. The 4L85 has heavy duty components to handle increased torque and horsepower requirements. Those components include 5-pinion output and reaction gearsets. Within these gearset assemblies, the smallest gears are the pinions that revolve around the sun gears. Four-pinion gearsets are sufficient for most applications, but adding a pinion gear to the gearsets allows them to handle higher loads. |

so if you beef up a 4l80e you should be in the same boat as if you got a 4l85e.(probably better)

tho I guess when you get finished with the car... you can tell people you have a motorhome transmission in the car to handle its awesomeness

Once you gut them, the 4L80E/4L85E are as strong as whatever components are put into them. At that point it really doesn't matter which one you start with. Pretty much every component in the SST tranny is considerably stronger than stock. Even the case is reinforced.

did you have the case (and the engine block while we're on the subject) resonant vibrated to relieve internal stresses before it was assembled?

I don't know about the transmission case. I am sure it was at least shot-peened for stress relief. Tom grabbed 3 LSX blocks and sonic tested and relieved each. He then handpicked the final SST block out of the three. It will be good to go. Last edited by speedster; 08-13-2011 at 08:49 PM. |
