Labor Day Weekend

source, Dallas Morning News

Don't test 'no refusal' DWI effort

08:34 AM CDT on Thursday, August 28, 2008

Whether it's a few too many shots of Patrón or a 12-pack too many of Miller Lite, you may find yourself in serious need of solid legal counsel if you combine either with a foolish attempt to drive.

Let us help. We'll spare you the $75-per-half-hour fee and include it in your 75-cent daily newspaper charge

If stopped by a sworn law officer, you may be offered a chance to take a Breathalyzer, right after you flunk your field sobriety exam. Our advice? Don't blow.

That's all we have for you. You knew better than to drink and drive. Throw yourself on the mercy of 12 there-but-for-the-grace-of-God fellow citizens in a jury trial. Your odds aren't bad, without the breath-test evidence.

Thing is, The Man knows that, too.

The Man got tired of juries letting you walk. The Man had about a 60 percent shot with a breath-test, which you could deny him. (Sure, if you did, The Man would suspend your license, but a judge would just give you a work-only privilege and off you went.)

So The Man road-tested a new strategy the past couple of holiday weekends designed to put your drunken behind in jail and secure that DWI conviction. It's built on the bulletproof evidence of your own blood, which will give you up every time.

Oh, you'd never agree to a blood draw, drunk or not. By the time The Man could get a search warrant, the evidence would have degraded. You knew it. The Man knew it.

But now you don't have a choice.

The Man calls it a "no refusal" DWI weekend. Forget the breath test. The Man hauls you to jail, where a judge signs a warrant on the spot and a nurse withdraws enough of your alcohol-enriched blood to put a conviction on your record.

So for that same 75 cents, here's our best advice. It's Labor Day weekend. The Man is out in force on another "no refusal" crusade. Drink if you like, drive if you must – but not both.

This time you will lose. Don't say you weren't warned.

It's sometimes amazing how stupid people can be. Don't get hammered and drive. You can get your car tomorrow. Take a cab.

On a side note, I will be throwing a party at my house in Lawrence, KS. My sister's sorority will be there. Feel free to crash on my couch on Labor Day weekend after a night of beer pong—problem solved, no drunk driving and still lots of drinking.

I always wondered why people think they have to get drunk to have a good time in the first place???
Could someone give me a good reason?

People are naturally competitive. We like to outdrink, outplay, and outperform. We do things that inhibit all of these things to show others who can hold it. That's the college explanation, anyway.

I like to drink.

I love beer. All kinds. Pilsners, Lagers, Ales, Stouts...

But I do not drive when I drink. The only kind of alcohol you'll ever find me mixing with driving is in the event I decide that I have enough disposible income that I need to build an alky dragster. And that's methanol. You can't drink it. Well you can drink methanol but you'll go blind and possibly die.

Beer is good. I'm a big fan of Great Divide Brewing company. I know for a fact that next to no one here has heard of them. You're all missing out!

I wanted to clarify my previous post, too. I do not keep that "college mentality" about drinking. I'm just explaining what my peers tend to do, although I do play a mean game of beer pong.

You can have my couch when you visit as long as you're not a tool. I don't like mooches or otherwise unpleasant company in my house. I had a bad experience with a Marine quartering himself in my house. I thought the Constitution protected me from that, but apparently I was wrong.

Wow, you would think with something like "my sister's sorority will be there", more people would respond.

Anyone in the tri-state area is welcome to come to Long Beach. We're one block off the beach and a 10 minute walk from the bars. Many couches available!

I'm kind of disappointed, too. You guys could all show off your whips, and I guarantee there'll be some good times. Just stay out of my room.

I don't think it's the need to get drunk as much as the experiences while you're getting drunk. It's a common thing to go out for a drink, like the snobs going to starbucks to talk about rowing club. It's just a different crowd joking and carrying on.
